Hiring smart people sounds like a great idea but if they're smarter than you, why wouldn't they run their own business? Why would a smart person work for someone dumber than they are? I'm not saying they wouldn't - I'm saying you need to figure out a reason why they should.

Everyone who works for me is smarter than me, I'm the only one dumb enough to own the place. 😉

Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner. It was MDTC and Windows Firewall. (Which is frustrating, because the firewall is turned off for the domain!)

Good job at troubleshooting. I'm wondering what led you down this path versus something related to Networking, hard drives or software drivers?

Remembered it from several years ago with another SQL based application. Don't know what made me think of it at 1:30am. But I'm ok with it!

    • Streaming music for office (or anywhere)

Had a customer call and ask us to come and setup 10 Sonos speakers for their office. They said they picked them up because their overhead system was static-ee.

I assured them this was the wrong approach because commercial amps with 70v speakers don't just go bad all at once. It had to be FM reception.

It was. But they really wanted the Sonos so they could stream music. I told them this was silly because they already had a beautful sound system in place. They just needed a new source.

I installed a Nexum Tunebox2 https://www.nexum-design.com/tunebox2 for them and I have to say, it is truly sweet.

Use any smart device or PC or MAC to tell it what to stream, and then you can disconnect and it will sing forever. Of course it'll do other things too. But set and forget was the goal.

Just thought I'd share about this little box. $64 on amazon.

Well, I'll be dipped. After installing KB4482887, and running these two commands on the server: "Enable-PSRemoting" and "Enable-WSManCredSSP -Role server"; I came back to Hyper-V Manager and BAM! connected right up!

    • RE: Windows Services not restarting

We recently picked up a new customer because the users couldn't log in each morning until they had walked over to the server and logged in to the desktop. We came in because the old company couldn't fix it.

We found AVAST installed on the server and AVAST is known for preventing services from starting before certain conditions are met.

      Uninstalled it and VIOLA!

Moral: Don't rule out the low hanging fruit.... 🙂

    • RE: I guess Skyetel doesn't want business

@JaredBusch Once you stop requiring companies deliver more than they are capable of or willing to, you'll find you aren't so unhappy.

What you're doing is no different than getting mad because the six passenger car you fancy won't seat 7 people.

Why are you out to get Skyetel anyway? First you were pissed they don't publish their partner rates, now you're pissed they need a cell phone to satisfy the business model they are currently operating with. If you don't like the way they operate, choose another provider. You live in a capitalist society...... You have options. And if you don't, build your own option; call it Buschtel.

      @WLS-ITGuy said in GPO question:

      @JasGot said in GPO question:

      net accounts /domain

      alt text

Which is interesting to know but I guess helps me figure out why they can't change their passwords.

And there you have it! Your GPO is preventing the exchange server from allowing the password to be changed any more often than 30 days. Come back in a month and it'll work. 🙂

So, I would leave the complexity in place, and set the Min Age to zero days. (All in the GPO on the DC)
Also, since my clients always put off changing their password until they can't..... I would implement this on your CAS/OWA server so they can change their passwords even after it has expired.

On the Client Access Server (CAS), click Start > Run and type regedit.exe and click OK.
      Navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchange OWA.
Right click the MSExchange OWA key and click New > DWord (32-bit).
The DWORD value name is ChangeExpiredPasswordEnabled and set the value to 1.

Note: The values accepted are 1 (or any non-zero value) for "Enabled" or 0 or blank / not present for "Disabled"

After you configure this DWORD value, you must reset IIS. The recommended method to reset IIS is to use IISReset /noforce from a command prompt.

    • RE: New ISP Issues at CEO's Home

Unless I am missing something, you need a router with DHCP on the WAN side and set the LAN side to 192.168.1.1/24

Consider adding some firewall protections too. Most firewalls are also routers, so you can do both with one piece of gear.

    • Rough morning with Windows Updates on Servers.

No common denominator yet, other than they are all windows servers 2008R2 and 2012.

We came in today to more than 10 servers stuck in update loops at 10 different customers. The loops went on for hours until they finally reached Update 5 of 5 and then reverted themselves.

Two of them required interrupting the startup and choosing safe mode, to nudge it along.

      I need a nap!

I'm really liking Edge Chromium. I like it's speed, and most of all, I like the brightness level and contrast of colors. I can see the fine lines on web pages and skinny fonts so much better than in Chrome.

    • RE: Videowall system

@thwr We build custom video walls all day long. We do all of our own work within the RTI and Vanco ecosystems. All items below can be expanded for (nearly)
unlimited sources and destinations. We regularly send IP Video across MPLS, VPN, WAN, 4GLTE, etc.... without any issues at all. We add Rokus, Cable STB, AppleTV, etc as the end user chooses. Screens can be made into a virtual single screens and each display can be segmented into as many screens as you want. Your imagination is really the only limit. We just finished a business development center for an auto dealership group. 51 inputs and 75 outputs including four 3x3 (9 screens), four 2x2 (4 screens) video walls plus a ton of 75" singles.

      Controller: https://www.rticorp.com/xp-8v-control-processor.html

      IP Video Decoders: https://www.vanco1.com/product/evo-ip-receiver/

      IP Video Encoders: https://www.vanco1.com/product/evo-ip-transmitter/

      Video Wall Control: https://www.vanco1.com/product/evo-ip-control-box/

      Plus whatever else you want/need.

The RTI software that creates the apps allow you to make the sexiest apps you can imagine for Ipads, Iphones, Android devices, Windows, Mac, Linux, etc....

Good luck! Video walls are so much fun!!!!!!

      https://us.hikvision.com/en

I see those everywhere as well. I think because they're cheap. I was very annoyed by the only system I ever worked with (required IE, 8 years ago now, but still, yuck.)

Hikvision was very popular because of price until it was discovered they had a backdoor to monitor every camera that had a route to the internet.

    • RE: Fully Functional Domain from Zero

@gjacobse Your questions leave out a lot of information.

I just did this in under three hours:

      1. registered a new domain
      2. brought it to life on a WHM/cPanel server as domain.tld
      3. unboxed three Dell PE 540s
      4. powered them on
      5. built a new AD Domain on the first 540 using a subdomain (ad.domain.tld) from step one
      6. provisioned DHCP
      7. provisioned DNS
      8. added the other two 540s to the new subdomain
      9. installed our RMM software on all three
      10. created one OU and one user in AD
      11. added our default (standard) GPO policies

Since it was time for lunch, I kicked off Windows updates and left. After lunch we boxed them up and took them to their rack at the customer and powered them back on.

We' joined one PC to the domain and logged in as the user created in step 10. Everything beyond this is customer specific (read: "Custom")

This fully functional three server domain was ready to go in three hours. It took another 4 hours to get lunch, box them up and drive them over to the customer site and load them in the rack and power them on and join that one PC.

If you have nothing else going on, this is a one day task. If you have other projects in motion, 3 days is reasonable.
