Even a lot of fiber services are like that now. And satellite. Upload costs more than download

      Not exactly how it works.

Fiber are doing because they choose to use modems that are built that way (looking at oyu AT&T UVerse), or to prevent "abuse" of their network by people buying low cost consumer internet and running everything.

Satellite works that way because power to broadcast versus receive. So yes more expensive only because of hte cost to have a strong enough transmitter.

I hate having to do this, but sometimes it has to be done. Here is how to get this middling PHP version onto this old version of Ubuntu.

Why do you hate doing this? Because Ubuntu 18 is older or because php 7.3 is older?

      Why not both 🙂

      I want PHP8 on Ubuntu 20.10!!

why are you stuck on 18?

      Why bother to ask?

It is not like @scottalanmiller is a person that holds to ancient LTS by choice.

    • Once off or short term remote access solution

Client purchased software through a VAR specifically so the VAR can configure and set things up.

VAR does not have their own "remote support" tool.

I need to install something to let the VAR in to a specific computer to configure the new software.

      Any recommendations?

This is something I am worried about, also.

I would be surprised if Sangoma didn't take care of it, but the code base is such a mess, I'd want to start over if I was Sangoma.

IMO, Sangoma bought something that looked good on the outside, but the underside was a disaster.

    • RE: Import a QCOW2 Into Proxmox

@ccwtech said in Import a QCOW2 Into Proxmox:

A couple of things I ran into. You need to make sure that you switch to BIOS to UEFI or it won't recognize that there is anything to boot to.

And you have to choose something other than VIRTIO for the controller. Because it's likely that there aren't VIRTIO drivers installed you have to use something else.

You can't install drivers to a device you don't have so...

You can add a 2nd hard drive to the mix as VIRTIO to get Windows to ask for drivers, then you can shut down, trash the 2nd HD and make your main disk use the VIRTIO controller. Obviously use the VIRTIO drivers for the other unknown devices that pop up and you are good to go.

None of that has anything to do with the actual import of a QCOW2 into ProxMox.

This is all crappy windows design. I've imported many things and with the exception of an ancient RHEL 4 system, had zero issues importing something that was already a QCOW2.

To follow this up with the resolution.

Apparently the prior admin went through ever single user manually and disabled all technologies that were not being used by that person.

All of these were unchecked, except for Outlook on the web and Mobile.

It should be enough to take a backup. It's an xml file that has all the settings.

Yes, I have that. I prefer a disk image also for critical gear running software I am not intimately familiar with.

You are confusing PCI-X (PCI eXtended) with PCIe (PCI Express).

It was a long time since PCI-X was the standard. PCIe is the standard today.

I'm not confusing anything. I simply typed PCI-X out of old habit.

I love to use fiber for inter-switch connections. Pretty much every switch on the planet has SFP available. Why waste the ports?

I'm still only using them as 1gigabit ports though.

So the final answer for this question is, yes. Upgrades are normally smooth.

But the 2.5 branch has some issues , so hold off.

What would suggest today for a gaming PC?
Budget is £700 for just the box. Also any recommendations on specs, daughter wants to play Minecraft, Sub Nautica, Fortnite.
(But i want to be able to play Counter Strike, Modern Warefare (not fussed running at Ultra detail settings) 🙂 )

The only way to easily get any sort of graphics card right now is to buy a pre-built. I haven't even looked at prices in months because the market is so crazy right now.

@stuartjordan The old SBS servers used to set up that way, way back in 2003/2008, you filled in a wizard and it built itself.

I do not remember seeing SBS ever create a /8 but yeah, so many bad things came out of people clicking next through everything in SBS.

As I have a single camera that doesn’t meet your needs (Ring Doorbell) I’d like to stay away from WiFi. I have serious performance issues with it. But that could be ring and not a WiFi issue ( last speed test was 220 down and 13up)

Obviously not anywhere close to the same thing.

True security camera systems will have local recording. Local WiFi is more than stable enough for that.

I have no experience with them but I keep seeing hikvision everywhere.

      https://us.hikvision.com/en

I see those everywhere as well. I think because they're cheap. I was very annoyed by the only system I ever worked with (required IE, 8 years ago now, but still, yuck.)

Hikvision was very popular because of price until it was discovered they had a backdoor to monitor every camera that had a route to the internet.

      https://ipvm.com/reports/hik-backdoor

      Good to know.
But on the other hand it's not wise to open your security cameras to the internet - ever. All devices are filled with backdoors and vulnerabilities. Some are known, most are not.

so the only way you'd ever have cameras is with local access, or VPN access to that local network?

A common way is with VLANs, like mentioned in another thread.

I don't think this really gets to the heart of what most people want.

I'm guessing JB's client wants to view these cameras while they are at home, etc.
It's more about the remote access than the LAN based protection... but yeah, sure - Using a VLAN and ACLs is probably a good idea to help keep things separated.

It is remote access to a NVR never a specific camera. Cameras never need to be open to the internet.
