    • RE: Synology

I have a DS211J at home. I back it up to an attached USB hard drive as well as use iDrive from my laptop to back it up to "the cloud". I don't really use any of the extra features, just the shared folders and the time backup (kinda like VSS).

I have a client with a Rackstation 2211RP+ with an attached RX1211 expansion unit. It works very well and is rock-solid. Again just using the shared folders on an AD network.

@scottalanmiller Yup. I also tried out Relic as well, on the promise I would get a Raspberry Pi........that never happened. It's a cool service too.

Same here. Though I need to spend more time with Relic as I get a LOT of email notifications on scores and whatnot. Seems like a lot of false positives. I need a way to dial it down. And no Raspberry Pi here either...

@ITcrackerjack seriously? How did you not know that? AFAIK that is the top selling PB.

I've never noticed it in stores before! Maybe it's not a West Coast thing. Kind of like no tri-tip on the east coast. I know I'll definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for it!

It's so funny the the Miller peanut butter and chocolate chips tradition has spread. I forget that not everyone eats peanut butter out of the jar with a spoon, ideally with dark chocolate chips, until someone outside the family hears about it and reminds us that it's not exactly normal, lol.

I've done this since childhood, but I prefer milk chocolate chips! Spoons of PB is a daily occurrence at my house.

Milk chocolate and Peter Pan honey roast or Reese's PB here.

Dude! I never even knew honey roast PB existed!!! I've got to find a jar of that now!

128 is very small in capacity. I got my laptop with 256 GB SSD and I always wait the end of every month to replace it with a 512GB SSD but it never comes 😛

I'll be getting the 120 for my wife. We store all our files on our NAS so nothing is local but apps and her dropbox synced folder. I have the 250 in mine, but that's only because of my VMs.

Our business email infrastructure is on google apps too.

I haven't used any of the chrome books but I'm finding it hard to justify one.

How do these live in your workflow? Do you use these for business?

      🙂

I think it would be hard to justify in a business environment, unless you are already tightly integrated into the Google ecosystem. I see these getting into the education niche. Maybe using them in a lab environment when a full Windows desktop isn't needed (and where it is, use these as a thin client into an RDS). The other use case I see is for sales people on the road (again, who are tied to the Google ecosystem) or university students (I would have loved one while in Uni).

If you don't have legacy non-web systems, you'd need something else. But if you are modernized they are perfect.

Whoa. I'm trying to wrap my brain around this statement and I'm failing. Can you word that different for me? <scratching head>

Chromebooks are built for the modern app world. Modern app design is web based. Exceptions exist of course but very few and only extremely niche. It is a very rare company needing anything locally installed today. And less everyday. Companies need that only because of old apps that they keep running, bad choices or niche needs.

That's what I thought you were saying. Double negatives often just confuse me. =\

Yeah unting myself from outlook would cost me time and efficiency. Not gonna get me to move there. Using the plug ins for CRM saves me so much time. Can't do the via OWA. The idea of the chromebook is a great one. Just for the Management side of things would just cost me time to only be web based for some things. Not having Excel installed locally and Word locally would make typing contracts and doing accounting work cumbersome. Can I do those via the web apps yes but at the cost of efficiency it makes it not worth it at all.

      Yeah, I get that!

I do like .NET. One reason is because the libraries are nearly identical between the web side (ASP.NET) and the desktop side. If going down the .NET route, I definitely recommend C# as it uses more common syntax (very similar to PHP, Java, Javascript, etc...). .NET has TONS of libraries for doing tasks. On the flip side, there are many libraries for PHP as well to do things like this. This being said, Javascript is also a must if doing any web app. There will almost always be the need for some client-side functionality and JavaScript is what you'll usually need to do it.

Or F# instead of C#. Lots of high end development prefers F#.

That gained traction huh? I've been out of that game for a few years.

Can you fully install Office Pro Plus now? When I had a chrome book previously I could not install anything. Not having Outlook on a desktop is a no go for me.

No, you can't. Only apps from the Chrome web store will work. You need to untie yourself from Outlook! =P

      @scottalanmiller could not agree more.

Seems that everyone is using the term VDI for any desktop (regardless of user or server desktop) which is accessed through the cloud.

VDI is rather expensive, XenApp/RDS will work for most things as you have well said a million times.

Or you cheat and use Windows server (datacenter license) instead of the desktop license.

But then it's not a desktop;). VDI is a Windows license situation more than it is a technology. Do it with Windows server and you are doing single user remote servers.

Are those 2 things mutually exclusive? That's what we do with Parallels Virtual Automation for our VDI solution.
