It is not against the TOS. If you have a standard DB account, you can install it on as many devices as you want.
If you have a DB Business account, which is minimum 3 users I think, then each user should have their own account.

Dropbox was perfectly fine with me purchasing multiple standard accounts and then installing them on whatever devices make sense. But if we wanted a business plan, they want one account per user. Although when I talked to them about our "generic" multi-user computers, they were still okay with having one account used on multiple general stations.

One Drive Sharing in itself should be sufficient. If I create a file, I can share with certain users or everyone and they are able to see it under "Shared with Me" directly under their OneDrive.

If it is shared in OneDrive, then why copy it to a network shared folder? That doesnt really make any sense? I can understand copying it locally of course, but why the need for it to be in a shared folder?

To my knowledge (tested about a year ago), OneDrive folders when shared could not be synced to local computers. It would only sync your own folders. This may have changed but local computer sync simply couldn't be done back when I used it.

I'm not doing a second copy to a local shared folder. I simply want local sync period. Obviously if our share becomes a lot larger than 11GB, it will begin to make more sense to not sync absolutely everything. But the folder isn't growing that fast so I'll wait for that day.

WebDAV is not the answer to my questions. Nobody here is going to work all day out of Cyberduck.

I talked to Dropdox support directly and they are fine with sharing users if that is how your office functions. In other words, "general" computers that multiple people use, they don't belong to any one person, so general accounts can be set up on them. We have generic shipping computers, floating stations, lobby computer, multimedia computer, etc. They aren't used by any one account, so a shared account is perfectly fine with Dropbox.

Why not go with SharePoint online? Check out/in, versioning, reviewer control, and offline capabilities work really well. We've been deploying and managing SharePoint since the 2003 days and any of our clients that adopted it are still using it.

Most modern document creation and editing apps support it and its features.

And, it's cheap.

As I recall, the CEO of DropBox is on the record for the lack of security in the product (read backdoors).

Our O365 account level doesn't have Sharepoint. Not in the budget apparently.

Isn't the included OneDrive basically already built on top of SP in some sense?

Keep in mind the users here want nothing but standard Windows Explorer folders to browse around files. No way they will use an online interface or SCP programs etc.

I plugged in an external USB drive to act as a backup for the NAS. Using the app Hyper Backup it was in the middle of doing its first full backup when suddenly the Synology DS216+ crashes, beeping, blinking orange lights.

I log in and see all these:

The NAS has 2 x 4TB WD Red drives. I'm running them striped since I wanted more space and perhaps speed.

Anyway, when I go in Storage Manager to the HDD/SDD section, it says disk 2 is crashed and has a bad sector count of 6 now.

The status light is blinking orange. The Disk 2 light is solid orange. About 5 minutes a splash of new "Bad sector was found" messages pop up.

Neither drive has had a bad sector up until now. SMART has always been ok.

Of all the space available, over 7TB, I've only got about 1.2TB on it so far. No problems until doing this backup to the USB drive.

What I don't get is why something simple like a bad sector is causing the entire volume to crash and everything to halt? Bad sectors happen, why isn't it just marked and move on? If the bad sector was found where a file is stored, why can't it just report that file as corrupt, mark the bad sector and move on? This doesn't make sense, that one little sector causes the entire volume to crash!

Lastly, it doesn't tell me what to do. It's just like, hmm, backup everything and buy new drives. Over a bad sector!! Try to backup everything, when it's crashed and doesn't let me open any shares? I can't tell if it's doing something in the background, like trying to recover, or if it's just stopped, cause it keeps popping up messages every 5 minutes, so maybe its doing something?

What the heck do I do then? Turn it off and on and hope it recovers? I don't know.

This sounds really ridiculous! In a business environment you are worried about the difference of. $130 a month? I mean how many hours a month do you spend troubleshooting?
How many hours do you have in this whole fiasco? It seems like alot. $140 a month would save you a ton of money, actually.

Assuming the $140/m product actually works without bugs. The NextCloud setup was hopefully going to fix all the problems we saw with Box.

Again, I've gone over additional training with people using the cloud about exactly how to move files around and verify that it happens. But "the cloud put my files back".

I'd love to command more control over technology and just demand people use it, but that's assuming the product actually functions.

And yes the environment here is a bit toxic in terms of people getting a kick out of whining about tech and using that as a jab on me. I'm often backed into a corner being forced to try and explain why some random service we use doesn't have some random feature they think it should have. Like "well how come I can't XYZ huh huh huh!!?!?!.........well because that service doesn't have the feature..... why wouldn't they put that feature in! It's a basic thing, why why WHY!!?!?!..........um, I don't know, ask them."

I hate being made to explain why other people's software works a certain way or has or doesn't have a certain feature or can or can't do something. As if I work for those people or have any say in how their software runs. I once had to endure a 10 minute lecturing session because the boss didn't like that Adobe has a monthly subscription model for Creative Suite. Chewing me out as if I were literally the CEO of Adobe.
Come to think of it, I often have to be the whipping boy for every technology we use, every time it gives us any grief. They always act like we have unlimited choices in services and so if this one hiccups, there must be 32 more to choose from that not only have every feature we use, but all the features we want, and is also in the right budget.

But I don't want to rant! lol

I really do want a cloud that just works though, handling basic things like reliably syncing files to computers, and can handle file renames and moving files around without creating copies and such.

I don't think it's users fault, which is, of course, what I tend to say for the first 2 dozen reports of issues, but after a while that just gets old.
The users are not doing crazy operations. They just rename files, or do a CTRL-X to cut a file and then go CTRL-V to paste it in another folder. What happens is the "cut" file reappears in its original location even though it appeared to be deleted at first. Sometimes it would be a day or two before a previously cut file suddenly reappears back in the original folder.
Same thing with file renaming. The original file might magically reappear alongside the renamed one.

So user error or not, what keeps happening is that we find duplicate files in multiple folders because the cloud (not the user) mysteriously decided to make the file appear in its original location again, creating a duplicate.

This happens to multiple users from multiple computers and is very inconsistent. Of course every time I try to test these issues, it works perfectly.

Unfortunately I can't use 3rd party tools like Cyberduck or WinSCP because everybody is used to browsing with the normal Windows Explorer experience. When they go to save or save-as from other programs like Word etc, they use the normal Explorer save dialog box to find the cloud folder to save to.

NextCloud is relatively good about creating conflic files if two users edit the same file independently, but we've seen cases where people are POSITIVE they made edits to files and saved them, only to find days later the file they edited is reverted to one without the changes. And the changes they made are NOT recorded in the NC revision system. Those changes just aren't found, despite them being 100% sure they edited the file. And since this has happened many many times for multiple users, nobody trusts the system any more.

After going through Google Drive, OneDrive, Box.com, and now NextCloud, none have worked out. They've all been buggy, inconsistent, create too many sync issues, "lose files", desktop app closes unexpectedly, orphan files between web and desktop, renaming issues, file cut/paste issues, etc.

I've been tasked to once again change clouds and find something else that is hopefully more robust.

We need 40+ GB primarily as a single shared folder for the entire office to use. Although if the boss has their own personal folders for corporate stuff, that would be good, but everybody else just needs access to the one master shared folder.

We have 12 or so desktops and a half dozen laptops and some phones and home computers to connect to.

I was thinking of trying Dropbox this time. Buy two standard users, one the boss/management can share, and one for everybody else in the office to share. Then the 1st account creates the master share and shares that to the other user.

I've always had good luck with Dropbox on my personal one.

Any other ideas, hopefully low budget options? There is no way I'm paying $140/m for Dropbox Business for 11 employees to have their own accounts. It's not necessary here, all way want is shared access to one master folder and very robust desktop sync.

Our NextCloud server is $10/m so if we can keep budget low that would be good. Who knows, I'll probably have to switch again in 3 months when they start complaining of whatever new bugs they come across.

I don't know about any logs beyond just the activity stream and revisions system. The desktop client also has an activity log that I watch.

What makes this difficult is that nobody seems to know the problem happened right at the time. It's always days if not weeks later that people suddenly "are sure" they updated the file but now the changes are gone. The activity stream will simply lack any edits by them.

Case-in-point. A file they say had about 12 rows of data in it. The activity stream has 5 changes by users and there are 4 files revisions. None of the revisions contain the 12 rows, none of the activity shows an edit by the person who claims to have edited it. But they are SURE they did it, saved the file, it synced, they saw the data there in the file after that, etc. But a week or two later those 12 rows can't be found and there is no history of the changes.

My thinking here is that maybe they did update the spreadsheet, but somehow those changes only remained locally, it just didn't sync. But if this is true, eventually they would get a conflict cause the system would try to sync when it comes back online. Either it would sync the new changes (assuming web version never changed), or the web version would be newer and they would get a conflict file created, which also didn't happen.

I'm feeling like Dr. House right now, I think everybody is lying. NC the desktop client, the end user, Excel. Everybody is lying and I can't find the truth!

I don't think so. When Excel opens a file it creates a temp copy, a hidden file with a tilde in the file name, these are excluded by NC anyway. Then when the file is saved, the tmp file goes away. But I don't believe there is any kind of 2nd full copy/cache.

Now, Excel does have an autosave feature. The location is not within NC though, it's down in the user's AppData folder somewhere. So this is likely not an issue. It's not autosaving to the original file, in other words, autosave creates another file somewhere else.

Heck I'd rather do a lot of things.

These Excel files are mainly used for tracking physical inventories, parts on order, incoming/outgoing/received/awaiting/etc.

Much better to use dedicated software for this kind of tracking, but we can't always get what we want. They are used to spreadsheet files, been using them for a decade, so a custom database just isn't in the cards.

Files based on vendor, which also contain lists of our own orders which are awaiting product for the incoming parts, etc. It's been evolved over the years and it's just the way it is. How they manage the files, how they are named, what folders they go in, and how data is entered, all very precise and people trained to use it.

And up until a few years ago these files would have been on a folder share on some random computer in the office. At least with the LAN share if someone opens a file, it won't let another person open it too.

What we don't expect is for verified changes to files that multiple people saw were updated, to be randomly reverted. We don't expect newer files to be overwritten by older files, I can't fathom how that kind of event can happen. Some kind of weird timestamp issue in Windows?

We don't expect a very normal Windows operation like cut/paste of a file to magically make the cut file reappear at a later time.

These are weird errors, which leave no backtrace of activity or file revisions in the web interface.

Right, but when person A says they are done making changes and the icon is green, the other person shouldn't have to wait 30+ minutes for it to sync. I've tested sync speeds and for these files it only takes 5 seconds so it's really weird. One or the other computer is simply not making it to the cloud, or blocked by firewall or I don't know what. The NC client certainly isn't throwing any errors.

Nobody would replace it, how can they? If I cut a file and paste it somewhere else, NC should be treating this as me deleting the file, which should then propagate to the rest of our users. After all a "normal" file delete propagates and works relatively well. But why would it fail a lot by using cut/paste? What's the difference?

So no known issue. This is how a normal file system behaves if people overwrite each other.

Don't see how that's possible. It would not be users overwriting each other, it would have to be the NC client overwriting. But why would it do that? Why would someone else's older file overwrite the newer changes made by the person?

I have a general "admin" user that nobody logs in to. This user is the one with the master shared folder that is shared to everybody else. We don't have a re-shared type issue. It's just a single folder shared to all accounts by this main user.

I couldn't say, but when I test making changes to a typical Excel file, it only takes a few seconds to sync and then turn green again. So maybe 5 to 10 seconds to sync back to everybody else.

Other than that forget, 2 users in nextcloud or any other software using the same file will create conflicts, and I noticed Nextcloud handling them very well, It creates the conflict file and keeps the original. The idea with NC, try using the share system of user called share and making folders in this user and sharing it to groups and see if that helps instead of individual sharing files . Making a default shared folder for users in the same dept usually helps.

We are aware of how conflicts work. This is very visual to people when they see a conflict file appear, they know what is going on and what to do about it. But in all the various problems I listed, there is no conflict file created.

This is a looooong time issue for me. I just hover the cursor over the top right-ish area to close the box. Never actually seen the icons here before.

So it seems we are having millions of issues. Millions I tell you! The employees are all running around claiming the ghost in the system is reversing changes, undeleting files, not saving changes, reverting changes, etc etc.

I can never duplicate these problems, but we have dozens of them and now the boss fully distrusts the system, says it's sh*t and we can't work like this any more.

So what problems?

1. Files are cut and pasted to move between folders. The pasted file remains but the cut version also remains in the old location. Even worse, it appears like it really cut (on local machine of course), but later we find the file still exists, was put back, re-uploaded, reverted, whatever. Thus we have duplicate files across different folders.
   Because cut/pasting files seems to randomly fail, this happens like 50% of the time, we're constantly having to re-delete files that should not be there.

2. Changes to files don't sync. We work on a lot of Excel and people are complaining they open the files, make their edits, everything appears to save and what not. Then we find out days later the information is missing. The file either saved but later reverted, or someone else's older copy re-uploaded? Or maybe it never sync'd those local changes to begin with? (I'm not sure how that can be because I would think I'd get a conflict file at some point).

3. Files are renamed but this seems to interfere with editing them or moving them around. Sometimes editing a file will also come with making a change to the filename. Again these changes appear to work from the perspective of the local user but later we find problems with the sync on everybody else.

4. I've had complaints that two people will be on the phone with each other. One person is making edits while the other one waits. Person 1 says ok I've saved it and says it synced. Person two opens file but doesn't see changes. This goes on for 30 minutes, supposedly, she waited 30 minutes and could not see those changes.

5. Files activity and revisions appear incorrect. A file will say it's 20 days old (when looking at web interface) but we know for sure someone has edited the file within the last week. Looking at current and prior revisions, those changes are not there.
   Of course, when we discover these problems, we go looking for those missing changes, nobody has them, all files are in sync with same data as the web interface shows, but the person swears up and down they made those changes and saved the file. Thus I get a lot of "my changes just disappeared" complaints and "they were there before!"

6. I have a laptop that I'm using to train everybody how to use the cloud better. Waiting for files to sync for a longer period of time before making a consecutive change, etc. This laptop is never used to edit files, it's just a spare computer in my office that happens to have NC on it.
   Suddenly 20 minutes after I've been giving my presentation and looking at all these problems, I get like 7 files appearing in certain folders with "conflict" in their names.
   I happen to know that in NC, conflict files are not synced to the cloud but are just kept locally for the person to figure out.
   I have not edited any files on this laptop. For example two of the "conflict" files were over 3 weeks old since their last changes, pretty much archived files. But they appeared as conflicts on my laptop, within a folder where the current copies aren't even located.
   I other words, 3 weeks ago file1 and file2 were moved into /archive. But now on my laptop suddenly the two of them appear as conflict files within /whatever/folder where they used to exist in the past.
   Why did my laptop suddenly drudge up random old files from weeks ago and call them conflicts? And why only 20 minutes after I've been on the laptop and everything has long since been sync'd up? They literally just popped up out of nowhere, these 5 or 6 conflict files. And again, I don't edit files on this laptop, so what's the conflict? grrr

I'm always telling people to wait for their changes to sync. Looking for the blue dot to appear or the system tray icon to change and come back to green, etc. And of course everybody says they do this. So they make changes, wait for sync. Then days later we find everything is reverted or files duplicated or changes missing, etc.

I'm out of ideas for troubleshooting this. Part of me says user error but come on, using a cloud server should not be this freaking delicate. What more can people do after waiting for change to sync, reopening files to make sure changes are still there, calling someone else to open the file on their computer to verify it sync'd, but then still later finding the changes are gone?
I can believe user error for occasional one-off problems. Two people having file open at same time and getting a conflict or whatever. Or I can believe occasional network issue like maybe wireless had a hiccup or network was down right at time of file save? Who knows. But we are dealing with dozens of problems, everybody is complaining, issues dating back weeks. We now have to fully audit all our files and records against paper copies, ugh! It can't all be user error.

I thought, maybe there is a time issue, like a computer somewhere with timezone set different? I wonder if some random infrequently-used computer is going online and creating all these sync issues when it tries to catch up?
Could computers with different timezones or clocks cause issue? Could it be something with computers that aren't used very often? Mobile devices? Home computers that are only rarely used with NC?

I'm at a loss how to troubleshoot, since I can't actually duplicate any issue on command. Nobody takes personal responsibility, nobody says maybe they didn't really save, or maybe they really did a copy/paste rather than a cut/paste. Everybody blames the cloud, saying it is doing things on its own. I have to hear " 'it' changed my file, 'it' created a copy. 'it' didn't save my changes" etc. Always "it" did it.
I'm glad we don't pay our cloud a wage, since it appears to do more work on our files than our employees do!

I've about had it with cloud systems I tell you. Box was a mess, OneDrive was a mess, Google was a non-starter, no system seems to be robust enough to handle the extremely complicated task of 10 people editing various Excel files and moving them around in folders.
Maybe I need to wait for the next evolution of cloud sync software? A new technology that lets people edit files which then sync changes between computers. If anybody knows of such software that can do this, let me know!

For now, what the heck am I supposed to do about NC? Nobody trusts it, nobody thinks they are doing anything wrong. It's the magical cloud that just does things all on its own to mess with us.

I have to believe there is some kind of condition where a computer is mistakenly thinking its copy of a file is a newer one and overwriting the real file. If a file backup tool or antivirus were somehow updating the time stamp and causing old files to get uploaded, I would have a serious system-wide effect of every file being editing by the same person, which is not happening. Nor is NC recording the latest activity or revision as the file being overwritten. The revision history doesn't contain the supposed changes the person is so sure they made.
That tells me those original changes never sync'd in the first place. But even if that is true, why isn't there conflict files?

Nothing makes sense and I can't think of how to troubleshoot. If only there were a tall bridge nearby.

You really can't. Someone listing themselves as a developer and being one isn't the same. I work in development (not as a developer) and hiring at $100K salary in low cost areas is a struggle. Real developers with skills and some experience are in super high demand.

Logically, no one is offering $10/hr on Craigslist when there are $100K positions with benefits that can't even get reasonable interviews. Development is definitely anything but a penny pinching game.

Sure, developers struggle to compete with offshore work. But to get any quality offshore work you can't pay by the hour, you are hiring for years on salary. You can get lower hourly rates that way, but you can't do it hour to hour.

I would probably kill both my neighbors for a chance at one of these hard-to-get-interviews-positions.

Maybe you're talking about tech towns, Silicon Valley, NY, L.A., but in small town USA Bill Gates couldn't get a job here for more than $30/hr.

I do love where I live and want to work remotely but I guess it's like I said, I'm just not rubbing shoulders with the kinds of people who fill these sorts of positions. But then again I'm not a top tier programmer, I'm a web dev, I know a couple languages but I couldn't program a new MS Windows if you follow.

Where I live with a family of 5, take home pay of anything near $100k would be quite comfortable. And here I am pannicky over leaving my job for 3 or 4 hundred a week. It's pathetic.
