Pardon the geek out, but happy with a successful email send tonight...

What is so special about sending an email? Only that it was using AX.25 over VHF on 145.030MHz using a fifteen year old radio.. message travel about forty miles before it hit another computer then the internet....

Can't say about JAMF,.. but Microsoft Intune maybe an option. Once enrolled you can deploy apps, update, reset, remote wipe.

      for Apple products?

Yup, Microsoft Intune will do both iOS and Android.

I worked on one of those today too,… started with deleting the printer and driver. Which worked with the install of universal driver

Too bad you could stop at just deleting the printer and driver, lol.

Lol, true. This company does a fair amount of shipping,.. we are ordering a dozen printers in the next few months. Printers aren’t going anywhere for us.

Well - maybe it was a mistake,.. maybe not. But the page is turned and I have never gone back.

Deleted the one account I needed to externally - Google/GMail. And the list of passwords I had kept has been put through the shredder. Not getting them back now.

We joked - for months - how people would leave and then return,.. or say they were leaving - but in six months. Some went from full time to PRN.

It was the company that you could resign any time but you never left. So many of the staff said I could always come back - I was leaving on 'good terms'.

In thirty-five years there has only been one company I have considered and even inquired about returning: NTG. I have never and otherwise would never consider returning to a company I left. There was a reason I left - why would I return.

      Weekend plans:
Clean out my work travel bag in preparation for the new office Monday. It feels odd not being ready to do what I have done for just under two years.

Few things to finish paper work wise for Monday, ,… but Monday will sort out the rest and orientation and a full employee and not contract…. So many people were shocked to find out I was leaving and still a contractor.

Many tried to get me to stay,.. and I would have if the previous director hadn’t done some things.

And thus we grow- moving forward. …

So... Dell calls me the other day about one of our servers potentially having defective RAM. I go to the data center today to pick up the parts.... 1 big box with 24 smaller boxes inside... Each small box contained only 1 stick of RAM!!!! Leaving 3 empty slots per box!!! They only gave me 9 return labels, which makes no sense. I only need 6 boxes to return everything.

      I cannot math today,….

are you needing a free solution?

I wouldn't expect Teamviewer to give you unattended access for free. Heck they start nagging and possible disabling the use if they see you abusing the 'free' option.

This is for a 70+ year old club member for his own personal use between his laptop while in Florida and his home computer... so needs to be super simple and reliable and repeatable and - yea... free. And stupid simple.

Any time I try to set this now results in failure after failure and code regeneration - What's the use if restart after reboot if the code changes?

What do you mean by "code regenaration"?

I use Supremo, Meshcentral2 and Teamviewer, and have no issues, after reboots.

I used the 'incorrect' term code... Password.

You need to setup "unattended access" with fixed password.
      Look here:
      https://community.teamviewer.com/English/kb/articles/1227-setup-secure-unattended-access-to-your-devices

      Same is with Supremo.

Meshcentral is great and free, but you need to setup your server.

Interesting and not previously known. Will have to test and see. Used to be you only needed to click one maybe two boxes and you were done…

In the early days of Teamviewer, it seemed like it was really 'reliable' for setting to start up after reboot and being able to reconnect. Any time I try to set this now results in failure after failure and code regeneration password - What's the use if restart after reboot if the code changes? I mean - how does that help me when I'm five hundred miles away from the computer?

While I have moved to using NoMachine internally - there isn't any reason it can't be configured to do the same function am I correct? You will still need 'client / server' computers and the proper port forwarding in your router.

I ask to assist a club member who is about to spend two months in Florida, for something easy enough for him to work with.

      (Off to research)

Sounds like you're wanting a persistent remote connection to the target machine. MeshCentral gets the job done for me.

This is for a single person that is non-it and in his seventies. Mesh central isn’t an option as he isn’t going to want to set up or manage a server

    • RE: Going from Active Directory Domain to workgroup?

When going from AD to Workgroup you'll need to create local profiles on each computer for each person if they move between the computers. If they never use the other computer, then it likely won't be needed. Only their own profile on their computer

You should have a local administer account on all machines regardless as a just in case, use a complex password and disable it if you feel at risk. Or - will the users have local administrator rights to their computer allowing them to do and install anything. (risky).

File Server - or just call it a NAS. Yes,.. separate passwords here can be a bother,.. but 'easy enough' Even an off-domain computer can access a file share if you have domain credentials - I do so all the time at the office on a fresh imaged PC.

Here at home I have a dozen computers that are non-domain and non-Microsoft Sign-on and a central NAS. Some folders in the NAS are open READ (movies, music) some are password access with username. And separate UserNames from the Desktop.

I'm not sure, but maybe using LORAwan would be better? A good bit out of my league,.. but could do more of what you are wanting.

Sorry to hear - maybe they will comp you the day to take when you can sit and relax... a often rare thing to do in IT.

We are soon off to the in-laws for the afternoon. not sure I want to get into anything just yet with the limited time but need to research building a VHF gateway (Ham Radio) as there is a little more interest here now... Something I have looked at doing almost a decade ago. Technology has changed a bit but the premise is still the same
