@Tim_G That's a good idea. I'm pretty sure it was ignorance. I mean...they have a Windows server and installed the DHCP role, but did not configure it. DNS is somewhat configured correctly but all the endpoints are pointing to Comcast's DNS servers...soooo.

XenServer7 time sync DC/PDC emulator
Hi guys,
I just finished doing a system migration of the weekend for my client. Migrated them from some very old physical 2003 servers to 2012r2 (2VMS) running on top of Xenserver 7.0 on a Dell R530. S.A.M said that this forum was a good resource for all things XenServer so I just joined today.
VM1 is AD DS/DNS/DHCP/File server and the second VM is just a secondary domain controller with AD DS/DNS roles. VM1 has all the FSMO roles including PDC emulator. From my understanding the ideal time configuration is for the DC running PDC emulator to get the time from an ntp server, and then the secondary DC & workstations should then sync to the primary DC.
From what I understand though, when you install the guest tools on the VM, it will always sync to the XenServer's hardware clock and this cannot be disabled like it can on ESXi.
I wanted to see what you guys would recommend as far as best practices goes in configuring how these VMs/XenServer syncs time. Thanks!

RE: Samsung 850 Pro - No advanced replacement
@frodooftheshire Just got off the phone - yep - they stopped doing advanced replacements a year ago. The guy was nice enough and gave me a direct e-mail ([email protected]) to the management team to see if they will make an exception.

RE: Can POCKETHERNET replace a FLUKE?
@MrWright4hire Awesome! I've been following this for a long time and I've been waiting for them to start selling units again. Just put in my order! I think it's an awesome deal.

XenServer 7 Dom0 memory usage
So I just finished setting up a XenServer7 with 2 2012r2 VMs over the weekend and in the last two hours I've become aware of some warnings from Xenserver in regards to low memory for Dom 0. The XenServer host is a Dell R530 with 16GB of RAM. VM1 has 12GB of RAM allocated because it's hosting QuickBooks Enterprise & Intuit recommends 8GB of ram, and I figured another 4GB because it's also the main file server, DC, DNS, DHCP, etc. The Second VM is secondary DC/DNS server and I initially configured it with 2 GB of RAM. I figured this would leave 2GB total for XenServer.
Eearlier when I become aware of the issue, XenServer was at 98% of it's allocated memory. I adjusted the secondary VM down to 1GB of RAM to see if this would help. It didn't, but I also didn't reboot the XenServer as everyone is working. Possibly rebooting would have resolved the issue.
Now currently it's at 100.8 percent of it's allocated memory. I'm thinking the plan is to now wait until the end of the day (5 or 6 PM) and adjust the primary VM's memory down to maybe 10GB, and the secondary VM back to 2GB. That should then leave 4GBs free. From XenCenter I can see it's telling me that XenServer is currently using 1.3GB.
With those adjustments do you think I'll be okay or does it sound like I've got a bigger issue?

Outlook 2016 profile corruption
Hi guys,
So one of my customers running Outlook 2016 connecting to Office 365 on a Windows 10 laptop has had reoccurring issues with profile corruption - apparently after doing some digging it's related to an autodiscover.xml file being modified with incorrect data from a some source which nobody has been able to identify (at least from what I've read). Ultimately this corrupt xml file leads to Outlook not opening.
Many seem to be having the issue:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrZrySKbUTY - lots of people in the comments
When I first saw the issue I just figured "no big deal, profile corruption occurs from time to time," but when it happened the second and third time I knew something weird was up. What was also weird - the first time I created a new profile it went without issue for a few months, but the second time just a day. Apparently the issue is only effecting laptops and has something to do with going from one network to another.
From what I've read it isn't effecting Outlook 2013, so I rolled the customer back today. I just wanted to see if anybody has come across the issue, and if you have, how did you fix it?

RE: One Server -2 NICs, Different IPs
Ok guys...update from today:
After going through things more, apparently both adapters were "bridged" via a Microsoft virtual adapter in Windows giving the "switch"a 51.6 IP address. This makes zero sense to me. Considering both ports were connected to the same Cisco router - potentially there could have been some switch/loop issues.Anyways, I ended up disabling the "virtual switch" & secondary NIC (for now). I also found out that there was another small switch that was connecting to another network (from another business) in the building that had a Comcast gateway with its DHCP server turned on - handing out addresses in 10.1.10.X range. Fun stuff.
Anyways things seem to be working well now.

Cloud hosting solution for Shadowcontrol CMD
Hi guys,
I'm trying to get Shadowcontrol CMD deployed to manage my clients Storagecraft software/backups. I initially setup things on vultr, but it appears that kvm is not a supported platform.
Had the same issues as this guy here:
https://www.storagecraft.com/support/forum/unable-install-vps-instanceSo now I either need Hyper-V or ESXI. It's annoying because I have azure credits, but azure doesn't provide console access which I need.
Anybody know of any inexpensive cloud hypervisors, either ESXI or Hyper-V? Thanks.

RE: Ubiquiti WiFi vs... everyone
@dbeato I know. That's why I said it wasn't "entirely true." If he's looking at a new deployment he would have the option to purchase support. I should have clarified though.

Safely transferring sensitive information
Hi everyone,
I have a non profit client that asked me yesterday about sending/receiving sensitive information (SS numbers for example).
Currently when they're looking for volunteers data is sent from the volunteer's email address to an employees account (in charge of finding volunteers & using Google Workplace account) and then to the director's email address (Again Google Workplace account).
They were looking to implement DocuSign to more securely handle this process but I wanted to see if anyone else had any other recommendations.

Strangest Airprint issue has me stumped
Hi guys,
A client informs me he's having printing issues with his HP M477fnw printer. He tells me that certain PDF files wont print. We schedule an appointment and I find out the issue is not with his PC, but instead his phone.
He commonly prints vendor PDF invoices from the Apple Mail App to the HP printer and all of a sudden he says that invoices from this one vendor just wont print. So we start troubleshooting. First I look at the size of the PDFs that wont print - nothing weird here - 148 KB. Next thing I did was update the firmware on the printer.
I then have him attempt to print one of the troublesome PDFs - no go. I then had him download the Gmail App onto his phone just in case it was something weird going on with the native Mail App. No dice - same issue - most PDFs print, but not from this particular vendor.
I then had him send one of the PDFs to me. I have a Samsung laser in my office and it prints the troublesome PDF just fine. Having said that, I notice that the margins on this PDF are slim to none. I then hypothesize that maybe the vendor recently updated the layout for the PDF and the HP printer doesn't like it.
Then he tells me that his identical printer located at his home has no problem printing off the troublesome PDFs. Also, not that it totally matters but his PC is able to print the troublesome PDF file just fine.
At this point I'm totally befuddled. The only other detail is that this customer uses third party toner cartridges and he received some sort of corrupt memory error shortly before the problem started.
This is a really strange one for me. I'm trying to make sense of it. Can anybody shine some light on what could possibly be going on here?

RE: Create blank/unsaved documents in OneDrive
Yeah he's using local word. You're correct - online word does exactly this. Considering having him start documents there....

Create blank/unsaved documents in OneDrive
Hi guys,
Is there a way with OneDrive/Word that once you create a word document it automatically saves to OneDrive with a name of "document1" so that the "auto save" feature is turned on and already working? A great example is how Google Docs works - I create
a new "untitled" document and before I "save" or give it an official name it's already saving changes to the cloud in real time.I have a customer that starts work on multiple world files without remembering to save. He has a tendency to then lose said documents when his computer does windows updates/crashes/etc. I've convinced him that he can't trust the Auto Recovery system. I thought there was a way with One Drive that the file gets created by default in OneDrive so it's automatically saving as you go, even if it's saving as "document1," but I can't seem to make this work. One option is to right click in the OneDrive folder, select new word document, not rename (use default which is "New Microsoft Word Document") and then open it...but that's kind of a weird work flow.

RE: Router placement with PTP Unifi network
NVM...I'm looking more into it and it seems that it has dedicated ports for Data/management. It seems I should be able to plug Comcast gateway directly into "data" port and on the other end plug that data port directly into my router's WAN port and configure it with it's static IP.
-
RE: Router placement with PTP Unifi network
I guess my preference would be to keep the router in the new office because it's got multiple DHCP ranges/VLANs for various networks, and if the PTP went down, nobody would get an IP for local LAN network resources.

Router placement with PTP Unifi network
Hi guys,
One of my clients recently finished construction at a new office building less than a mile from their existing location. Comcast was supposed to complete installation of the new circuit at the new office already, but now things have been delayed with no ETA of installation.
We're now looking at Ubituqiti's AirFiber 5 solution (perfect line of sight) to make a point to point network. At the new office I have their new router in the rack and now I'm trying to decide if it should stay there or be placed at the original office where the Comcast circuit will reside.
Their existing Comcast gateway has a local 10.0.10.1 LAN IP and a static IP (96.89.X.X). Can I configure Ubiquti Airfiber device A (located at Comcast) to have 10.0.10.2 IP, Airfiber device B (located remotely) with 10.0.10.3 IP, and plug the receiver directly into the router's WAN side with the 96.89.X.X as if it were plugged directly into the Comcast gateway like usual? Or, would it be better to relocate the router to the comcast circuit and have the AirFiber devices use LAN IPs from the router itself (10.1.10.1) so it would be like 10.1.10.250 and10.1.10.251 for example. Or does it even matter?

I appreciate everyone's help!

RE: Vertically wall mounting Dell R640 Chassis
@scottalanmiller I'm not sure I'm following. If you mount it horizontally/level and you "unlock" the server via the front levers the server should stay right where it is vs if it's face down gravity will do it's job and the server will slide on it's rails outward (probably pretty quickly). Are you saying that you would screw in brackets in front of the server that would prevent it from sliding outward/down? If the stock rack ears used screws instead of levers I would feel a little better about mounting it front down.

RE: Vertically wall mounting Dell R640 Chassis
@DustinB3403 That's what I'm thinking. Still better cooling than having the top up, but a little safer when it comes to maintenance.
