So it's fair game for personal profit to use the patients...

It really does seem like he's giving away the horse and buggy. But at the same time any improvements they make must also be open to be used by anyone else.

So yeah it makes sense now that it's explained like that.

Further, all computers shared the same password for remote access and appeared to be connected directly to the Internet without any type of firewall protection installed

While this is possible - this seems extremely unlikely. No edge firewall/router/NAT device? Again possible, likely - seems not. Only exception to this I can think of is if each of these computers were on their own internet connection, not not a shared network for the facility.

Now - that said, it's completely likely that the Windows 7 machines didn't have firewalls.

Windows 7 has a firewall, and on by default.

Just because it was not some third party thing, does not mean no firewall. I hate news reporting on technical details.

I couldn't remember if Win 7 had one by default...

How? I don't know of any OS in the past 20 years that doesn't by default. Even XP did.

no, XP didn't - not until SP3 (might have been SP2)

I didn't realize you were still so incredibly used to vanilla XP that you aren't sure whether or not anything since then has firewall on by default.

My firewall has been burning strong since at least 2000 when I piped raw gasoline into a moat around my house and lit it aflame. But damn does it cost a lot with these rising gas prices. . .

At best? Isn't giving YOUR keys away to other people fall under hacking laws? It's definitely not legal for them to keep, let alone distribute, your key.

Dunno. I'm not a lawyer specializing in privacy and data protection laws. I can only speculate based on general logic. I have no idea about their eula/tos/etc either.

      Not to threadjack...
Now that I've experienced Fedora WS & Server updates, why do/does Windows updates suck so bad?

Microsoft has never been good at upgrades. You'd think they would have it figured out by now, but nope.

      Upgrades or updates?

Of course windows isn't perfect, but Windows 10 upgrades in my experience has been pretty damned awesome. updates for Windows 10 have been only slightly less so.

Now server updates - that's another matter.

Well we know you enjoy praising Windows 10 so this lip service shouldn't surprise anyone.

If they already have and use Excel, then what's the issue? Obviously it not being cross-platform isn't an issue there.

The issue comes from the desire to upgrade to newer versions. Microsoft, while they offer stand-alone installations of Office 2019, now require yearly upgrades if you need those new features.

Many organizations simply don't or won't pay for upgrades year after year for something that has traditionally been supported for several years at a time.

At the same time, they won't pay for O365 to just get access to Microsoft Office (ueo to the total monthly cost increase) from $0 to $12-22 per user.

Then they shouldn't have went down that path to begin with, never made the decision to go with software or platforms and services and business practices that require something that costs money.

Software company wanting to make money from subscription based services is nothing new. If they don't like it they can spend way more resources to move everything and everyone to something else.

      Edit: Quoted for posterity.

@Obsolesce you really need to reconsider before you start smashing your keyboard. These decisions aren't mine they are simply decisions that were made who knows how long ago that I have to deal with.

Your inability to understand that past decisions affects the future is very telling.

An AP that requires a 10Gb uplink port? That is sexy.

Party pooper time, do you *really * need wireless with that density and throughput?

Once I have a 12k display and gigabit fiber at home...

You don't have gig fiber at home?

The 12K display I can't even ask about as Apple is just now pushing a 6k.

I go back and forth on this. Ultimately I I think they should be paid because it's likely they are bringing some type of value to the company they are interning for.

Now consider that NY is pushing the minimum wage up to $15 /hr. It gets expensive to train someone when you only get a little work out of them at that rate. So as an employer, what do you do? Forget about the people with no experience and hire people that are actually worth $15 /hr.

The problem with that is that in this industry experience is worth more than a degree.

Pushing there "someday." For the near future, not even bothering to go to $11.

      0_1507917576855_DeepinScreenshot_select-area_20171013125906.png

IIRC the $11 an hour is for less then 1% of business in NY.

$10.40 is the future hike for NYS. NYC is higher, but NYS is not even going to $11 for years yet.

Which means I should ask for way more money today rather than wait. Because some high school kid is going to be making as much as I was some years years ago.

Gotta count for inflation. . .

      okay.. How does it work?

How does virtualization work? Just like running a program on Windows 10, each VM is a separate program that runs on the hypervisor.
