So we just got our new AT&T (yuck) 300/300 fiber circuit installed... and the dumbass tech wrote out the wireless password incorrectly for me. He very distinctly put upper and lower case letters (all were actually lower case), plus his 'q' looked like a 'g', the 'S' looked like a '5', etc. Had to go remove the modem from the wall to get the correct info from it. All sorted now, but jeez...

If not to much trouble,.. go photograph it. Get that and the MAC address.

Oh, I went and got all the codes and numbers off the device... except the MAC address (d'oh!). Oh yeah, check out this lovely speed test result...

    • RAID Performance Calculators

Just doing some searching around to calculate the performance of a specific build I'm proposing and would like some clarity on RAID Performance Calculators. Specifically this one. http://wintelguy.com/raidperf.pl

In my proposal I'm using Samsung EVO 850 1TB drives.

RAID Type: RAID 5 (stripe with parity)

Number of drives in a RAID group: 12

      Number of RAID groups: 1

      Single disk performance: IO/s MB/s
      Read performance: 540
      Write performance: 520

Read operations (%): (using the stock 50%)

But where would I find existing "Read operations percentage" ? This seems odd to calculate. I'm sure it has a logical reason for being there.

Does this mean: "What percentage of your access is people only reading something and then closing it?" And if so, how would I calculate this?

@penguinwrangler said in Copying Content from other sources:

      Quoted from: https://www.copyright.gov/fair-use/more-info.html

Fair use is a legal doctrine that promotes freedom of expression by permitting the unlicensed use of copyright-protected works in certain circumstances. Section 107 of the Copyright Act provides the statutory framework for determining whether something is a fair use and identifies certain types of uses—such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research—as examples of activities that may qualify as fair use.

Which means, if we link to said insanity for our "I can't even" topic it's fair use since we are criticizing it. Which is protected under fair use!

    • RE: Moving to local storage?

I would move away from ESXi if you truly want to save money. The pricing model is just expensive for SMB's.

Right now your in an Inverted Pyramid of Doom, so you have the right idea of getting rid of the SAN from the virtualization setup. Use it for a backup target.

Assuming those are 2.5" drives do you have a preference of storage type.

Have you looked at what RAID configuration is on the unit now? And what do you plan to build to the array, RAID 5 (ssds) RAID 10 (Spinning Rust)

What kind of work loads do you have on the existing platform?

How much storage space do you need (your SAN is near full)

    • RE: Effective and Realistic Security Training?

I would have to say "more realistic training" would be paid penetration and phishing attempts.

That actually result in something like "you've put your self / company at risk" page etc.

    • RE: Proposal

So from a tax perspective, this is a business looking to hire a freelance employee, since it doesn't sound like you have a business you operate.

You could suggest that to your ex-boss, and have your freelance rate be something realistic for a consultant, and pay taxes on it like that.

I'd be wary of doing anything otherwise, setting up a business costs money, and without more details I don't know if it's something you'd actually want to do.

@BRRABill Yeah thanks @todd-at-xbyte for the Edge Memory recommendation.

It only adds $325.32 / per server to my proposed solution.

And alleviates that concern about consumer grade gear. This is the unit I'm looking at.

    • RE: insurance - uhhh.. stuff.

I don't see it as being unethical, most health service providers will accept a lesser amount for a cash payment.

What I would do though is confirm if you can expense it back to your Insurance provider. Otherwise you might be out $200 bucks.

Plus does the $253 go towards any annual deductible you have to meet?

Get away from the idea that you want 1U and use NAS

you add a failure point that way...

As @coliver stated, you can possibly have lower costs by having internal storage.

Look at xByte for boxes too.

Why immediately jump to a NAS?

It sounds as if he need compute power and storage.

I'd look at a 2U server, @ryan-from-xbyte can help find you some great units.

So I really need another server in my home lab, nothing special, just enough that I can setup my lab and test out some of the really cool things from the Xen world (HALizard) and backup tools.

but I'm not finding anything even remotely reasonable.

Does xbyte have a clearance section that I could "dig through" and buy from you guys? @Lyndsie_xByte

I'm open to learning about any area. Networking, Linux and system administration have been some of the most interesting to me so far, and I keep sensing I'll be needing to start a base in programming too.

A programming background or expertice isn't needed, but it certainly helps. Before you decide on a programming language, you might learn Python. Also you should really decide on what you want to work on, Windows Linux, or Other.

The acronym SOS (Secure Open Source) really isn't the best one is it?

Save Our Souls.... many people who haven't the slightest clue might immediately think that open source is dangerous and that auditing is required because of "how insecure it must be".

I'm totally for it but I'm curious as to why they couldn't come up with a better name / acronym.
