So what? Did he really open source his patents?

      Yep. https://www.teslamotors.com/blog/all-our-patent-are-belong-you

From everything I've read (not that blog post yet) Tesla is really doubling down on this idea. They want other small manufacturers to get involved and force the infrastructure update, and battery research, to match what they are building.

No where else do you work for 1-5 years and have a life time position.

      Politics?

Not even there, sure the population has a hard time changing people out (especially in the US) but in politics you have to rerun ever few years.

It's essentially reapplying for the job.

      Depends. Federal Judges don't.

They are also appointed and not elected. Granted they have to go through a vetting process that can be, but often isn't, fairly vigorous.

Right. It's still sort of relatable since the college has to hire (similar to appoint) the professor.

Agreed, I'm against tenure in almost all cases. It leads to a lot of problems and doesn't solve the issue it originally meant to solve.

You can get an ER-X for 60$ (Not sure if that is what others here would recommend) you can also get a UAP-AC for $100. Not bad for the start of an enterprise network.

If you have an account on the Ubiquiti site, you can buy them for $49 from Ubiquiti.

I just looked, you can also buy the AC-LITE for &89.00

Edit: If you're in the US.

Oooh... That's tempting, I may pick one of those up. I need something to replace my aging Linksys/DD-WRT router.

    • RE: Exchange Student would like to Learn System Administration

@TAHIN said in Exchange Student would like to Learn System Administration:

What does "he knows nothing" mean? From my perspective, knowing nothing is what I did when I was 6. After that I always knew something about computers. On a scale from 1 to 10... 1 being "The cup holder in my computer is broken!" and 10 being entry-level job ready... how do you rank his current knowledge?

Teaching him about hypervisors would be pointless without a knowledge of system architecture. Teaching him about the OSI model would be pointless if he doesn't know what TCP/IP is. You need to gauge where he's at and go from there. Maybe have him pick up a (not too dry) A+ book. Maybe watch some videos about how TCP, IP, UDP work. Ethernet, switches, routers?

A+ isn't really an IT cert. So recommending it doesn't make a lot of sense. If they really want to learn Systems Admin tasks they need to do some work in it. Get a cheap server install a hypervisor and then send them the task list that @scottalanmiller made/recommended a few months ago.

Learning networking is great. Having a basis in that is a good idea for sure... but that's not really Sys Admin work if that's what they are interested in.

    • RE: Tips for a first time property buyer?

      @Nic said:

Make sure you go walk through the property with the building inspector so he or she can show you stuff in person. It's very educational and you can ask questions, rather than just skimming the report afterwards.

Make sure you budget in for house repairs, as there's something that will need fixing every couple of months.

I can't emphasize this enough. Walk through with your inspector, you are paying him to find issues you are his customer, not the bank, the sellers, or real estate agent. Ask as many questions as you can during the inspection to get a good understanding of what to look for and pain points for future homes.

On the second house we put an offer on the front wall was becoming dislodged from the house. The inspector was really the only one to notice it, that put a full stop on everything and we passed on the house even though it would have been perfect for us.

What is the advantage of going private once a company is public?

You're no longer beholden to what your shareholders want you to do and can do more innovative things that may not show short term returns.

In Missouri, we have what is called the A+ program. HS kids go through a program and have to meet certain requirements. Once they do, their first two years of college at a community college is free. My kids are doing this.

It's not just cost though. It's also invested time. Time spent on a college campus is time not earning money.

I had no idea that things on your desktop are automatically cached to RAM. When did they start doing that? It kind of makes sense, give you effectively a RAM disk to use easily, but as many Linux systems throw /tmp into RAM, but without people really knowing this, it is pretty surprising.

I've heard this from a few people. From the research I've done it never seemed to actually be the case. The only thing that was put into RAM were the objects in the Startup folder and the system services.

Now to A.J.'s point. Placing restored files on the desktop really doesn't make sense as you can easily drag/drop those files into the correct library location.

This is not that useful. Children will just hard wipe as AJ said, problem solved until the parents try to install it again and find the phone with a lock code on is so the parents can't mess with it. then there will be groundings, etc.. it's a never ending battle.

There is no foolproof way to stop a child from doing what he/she wants to do. The parents can only make it more difficult in the end.

Nothing like a fun and educational experience for young kids to learn the inner workings of their cell phones.
