    • RE: Merits of Staying Long Term with a Job or Moving More Rapidly

In the SMB world, there are often no positions "above you" to move to besides owner/operator.
In which case I tend to push for more budgetary flexibility so my "growth" comes in the form of experimenting with new technologies and attending seminars.

In a larger corporate environment, unless you're hoping to move towards managing more personnel, your growth often consists of department swapping. Moving from Help Desk/Asset Management, to Software/Network Engineer, or Net Sec. I suppose it all depends on your end game, "staying on" is a great way to specialize, but specialization can lead to a dead end. (as S.A.M. pointed out)

    • RE: Favorite Linux Distro

RHEL/CentOS for servers and hypervisors. (r/w speeds, default security protocols)

Previously I always used Debian based distros for my recreation, mostly because it was the first flavor I learned on back in the nineties so I'm a bit nostalgic. However, I've been thoroughly enjoying my new Korora notebook, and might finally leave Debian behind forever.

Good read! Wish I still had my blade in Chicago so I could test this out just for gits and shiggles.

    • RE: Block GPO Inheritance

@Brains Agree. I much rather manage SG memberships for GPO, than OU placement. Less clutter, less margin of error, easier access and oversight. I also understand that people often inherit their AD schema from predecessors and can't afford the time and risk for a complete redesign.

    • RE: HelpDesk Ticketing System

Recently joined a new outfit that's using "ConnectWise" which I've never tested previously. I typically lean toward OpenPHP projects so the idea that they paid for this unified software suite seemed a little overboard. The Outlook integration is functional but nothing that isn't also available on nearly every other project out there. The interface is a little cluttered with unnecessary elements, however the workflow for "ticketing > billing > timekeeping > payroll" has proven to be fairly efficient. While I wouldn't outright recommend a licensed solution, if that was the direction your organization wanted to go, you could do worse. $0.02

    • RE: What is the Upside to VMware to the SMB?

Thank you for voicing so eloquently what some of us have been trying to wrap our heads around. I personally come from a frugal era of IT and will always scout free solutions before coughing up the cash or subscribing to a (shudder) recurring licensing fee. We used to buy our modem banks by sniping eBay auctions, and that was at a tri-state telecom. I realize you need to spend money to make money, but unnecessary expenditures should still be avoid if possible, imo.

I thought I was posting the new thread into the forum which I was viewing. (Water Closet at the time) Apparently I was incorrect, still learning the interface. Have a great weekend!

    • RE: Disable folder redirection for specific users

In my GP implementation of Folder Redirection, I have a User Group for Redirected Folders and my policy only applies to users in that group. In order to disable Redirection, I simply remove that user from the group. Just had to do this for a user today, which reminded me of this thread. Hope you found an elegant solution here!
