    • NextCloud alternate data location

Cannot seem to get an alternate data location to work in Nextcloud. I built a new Fedora (minimal) server VM in my lab. Attached a new vdisk to the vm for data. My main vm is 20 gb and the data is 127 gb. I realize this is irrelevant. I mounted the vdisk to the server as /ncdata

Again, using @JaredBusch guide (which has never failed to work using the default locations) to set up the new test system. I adjusted the selinux script to reflect the correct data location. I also edited the php.ini file to reflect it as well. Everything works except not being able to write to that /ncdata folder. I have changed the owner of that folder to apache and it is confirmed by issuing ls -la while in that folder. I can find tons of info on moving the data after install but it seems most users go with the defaults. What am I missing? I have been working on this for a while and started over a few times. Still no change in the end result. I am trying to follow "best practices" but struggling.

@black3dynamite I did do that and it reflects it when I status the folder. I gave it rwx across the board. @travisdh1 I think the selinux could be the issue. I was going to disable it and see if there was a change, but ran out of time. I plan on looking at it today again.

    • RE: Remote management of VMs hosted in colocation

I thought virt-manager only used ssh to connect to the host. What about using key-based auth to the host and disable password auth? Seems it would be faster than going through ZT. I guess the laptop compromise still poses an issue in that scenario.

Created the new data folder /ncdata but I get an error when running the setup wizard Error
Can't create or write into the data directory /ncdata

I'm trying to figure it out but stumped. I have 5 working NC installs but they are all using the default data location.

Thanks guys. Learned some new things today. I set up 2 more NC instances in my lab. Trying now to decide the best route to move the data directory out of the default location. Seems everything I read takes a different approach to it. I want to build a new instance with a large amount of storage and migrate a ton of files. Even NC recommends ( I know you are all aware of this )moving the /data out of /www but finding it difficult settling on a method to do so.

@black3dynamite It is grayed out in the GUI and I don't see those files in /var/www/html/nextcloud

Edit: I was able to open the .user.ini file even though I did not see it listed.

Trying to update the file upload size in Nextcloud from 511 Mb. Having a heck of a time finding the correct file to update in Fedora. I can find it easily in another install in Ubuntu.

    • RE: Nextcloud Version Control

The main concern is if a file is overwritten, that it will actually retrieve a previous version of the file. I know the functionality is there. Just wondering if it functions as intended or has issues.

    • Nextcloud Version Control

Those of you that use NC heavily - How do you feel it handles version control? I have a client that is leaning heavily towards using NC and they are concerned with version control in the sense that they need to be able to revert back to a previous file if one is overwritten inadvertently. That is one of their pain points now as there are many users accessing the same files for different reasons. I know NC should handle this but looking for input from those who rely on NC every day.

The guide using salt stack (it has been a while) didn't work for me with multiple tries. Could not create new folders within NC.

Looks like a lifetime warranty on that switch according to this doc for original owner.

@jaredbusch Good to know. They are a MS only business so I will probably stick with HV. I have set up KVM on Fedora and use virt-manager on a Fedora desktop to manage but never Cockpit for management.

@jaredbusch Everytime I set up NC, I always "default" to a 3Tb VM but never use that much space. Don't know why or how I started that.

Backups will most likely be on a Synology nas. My biggest dilemma now is to use KVM or Hyper-V. I have tons of Fedora VMs on HV 2016 with ZERO issues but in the back of my mind I'm thinking of a Fedora KVM host and Fedora guests for NC and Nginx proxy.

@scottalanmiller That's good to know. On average for your installs - what size is your /data? The largest for me has been 3Tb.

I realize 15Tb is larger than most of my NC installs but this would be the most heavily used and relied upon. There would be about 35 users.

    • Nextcloud replacing OneDrive

A friend has been using OneDrive for a couple of years for his business and with the MS outage on last week, they lost approx. 250,000 individual files. The files were found in recycle bins on multiple users accounts. All "deleted" at 130 am and of course MS blamed the customer. After many hours on the phone with MS, they were able to get most if it restored.
He is beyond frustrated and asked about replacing OneDrive with Nextcloud. Each one of his client jobs creates a folder with approx. 10Gb of data. Will Nextcloud handle this or should I steer him towards another solution? He wants to have 15 Tb of storage for his projected growth over the next 5 years and not have to worry about it until it is time for a new server. It fits the bill and requirements he needs going forward. I am looking for opinions on NC and larger files and folders.
