@irj It requires 10g networking to the data repository for performing analytics on collected data. There will be large amounts of data eventually. The software developer requires 8 cores and 32g of ram minimum. I don't see how that much compute can be done in containers. I don't use them so I can't speculate on how well or not it would work.

@gjacobse My assumption is that they (developer) has a pre-built VM that is ready to go. They also said it could be on bare-metal but I don't plan on taking that route.

Virtualization Hostposted in IT Discussion
I am purchasing a new host server for some new VMs for a special project that will be on-prem. All VMs will be linux, mostly Ubuntu Server 20.04. The software developer requires Ubuntu. They also are wanting VMWare for the VMs to run on because they have an OVA file for a pre-built solution. However, they also said their software can be installed to a new Ubuntu 20.04. I am trying to avoid licensing VMWare for a few Linux VMs as I feel it is not necessary. There is no existing infrastructure where this new host will be installed.
I am leaning towards KVM for this. There will be no Windows VMs. I also considered Proxmox, mainly because I could utilize the backup server. I just have mixed feelings about Proxmox over vanilla KVM.

Installed a LibreNMS and Zabbix VM in my lab to test. Still not sure on which one I prefer.

If I am using a Windows machine I normally use Angry IP scanner. It has always worked well for me.

@scottalanmiller It gets better... The site is on IIS with the default test page exposed, which is also a "parent" according to IIS Manager and cannot be easily disabled without "breaking" the live site. Fun stuff.

Noticing how a large company has a website hosted on a domain controller.

RE: Windows and NFSposted in Water Closet
@scottalanmiller This is true. I forgot about my ReadyNAS units allowing multiple protocols.

RE: Windows and NFSposted in Water Closet
@Pete-S The locking is also what I was referring to. I will most likely set the share up for both and do some testing.

RE: Windows and NFSposted in Water Closet
@black3dynamite I know it can be done... I have read conflicting documents and articles where it goes both ways. Some say there is a risk of both systems accessing the same file via different protocols and causing corruption. I will most likely try it.

Windows and NFSposted in Water Closet
I have a F33 “NAS” for Plex that has 2 shared folders.
/media/movies
/media/musicPlex server is running F33 as well. No issues at all
My wife uses a W10 Pro (2004) to rip discs with MakeMKV. NFS is enabled on the windows box and has both shares to the NAS mapped. It works to move the files from the windows box to the NAS but it is painfully slow. Averages 5 Mbps on a copy. If I copy files ripped on F33 workstation with MakeMKV, I can almost saturate the network connection.
It is probably an unusual setup but it works for her. Why would MS implement NFS if it is so painfully slow. Doesn’t matter if it’s a 5 Gig file or 20 Gig. Same speed.
Anyone else have a similar issue or use NFS on Windows? I thought about using samba but have read that it’s not good to use nfs and samba on the same shared folders. I prefer to keep nfs because of the efficiency on my Linux clients.

Blue Iris is great. It is too bad it only runs on Windows. We have deployed in on mini PCs with great success.

Make that 6 servers to F33. I forgot about my nas and Plex.

Updated 4 servers to F33. They were up to date but it was time to upgrade versions.

Browsing shares from W10 (2004) on a domainposted in IT Discussion
Started having trouble with Win10 (2004) seeing local shares on the network recently. Computers randomly show up in "Network". The proper services are enabled and running per MS documentation:
Function Discovery Resource Publication
Function Discovery Resource Publication
SSDP Discovery
UPnPFirewall is set properly but it doesn't work even if you disable the FW temporarily.
Network Discovery is enabled, and of course the network is private as it is on a domain. It should work without enabling SMB 1.0/CIFS. Users can connect to shares by entering \servername in the file explorer with no issues.
At this point it may be easier to add a startup script that maps the shared drives. Problem is - the users are so used to browsing to the resource they need manually via the 'network' section within explorer.

The only thing that comes to mind is the "channel width" setting in the Unifi AP. Drop it down to HT20 or 20 Mhz and see if you can connect.

@scottalanmiller @JaredBusch I went ahead and set up a Zoho account. It was very easy and it even built the DNS records on the registrar. Only needed 2 email accounts. $24 plus tax for a year. Been using the ISP provided email for 20+ years, and I don't even have them for a provider anymore.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Nowposted in Water Closet
Looking at purchasing Zoho mail for one of my personal domains. Want to migrate away from an ISP provided email account. Already own the domain. Anyone using it? Good? Bad? Very affordable and I don't mind paying for something that doesn't have adds and other garbage.

yeah, I use the numeric keypad alot, but I find it really annoying when working on several remote machines, it's on, it's off, it's on it's off. Don't have to worry about that when you don't have one.
True...Especially with Hyper-V.
