Fedora 17 and Ubuntu 16.04?? Do they have custom ISO install after you buy it?
I didn't even see the VM bit until I quoted it. I was just assuming since he was considering buying a used server in the first place that he may be interested in having something capable of doing more than just a NAS.
@stess said in Buying used server from another IT guy... Not sure what to look for:
As I mentioned before this is primary for a NAS and maybe VM in the future.
@reid-cooper I'd setup the KVM host that I've been wanting to try out and have a nice home lab, instead of a single purpose NAS that can't really do anything else all that well.
Also, as @Reid-Cooper the power draw on a NAS will be massively less, but it's extremely limited on processing power.
I'm kicking myself now for buying my Synology NAS 3-4 years ago, even though I really do love it. I could have had a full blown server that I can run whatever I want on for like $150 more.
I'm pretty sure the SAS6iR has a max drive size of 2TB, so that should be a consideration depending on what drives you want/have.
I would personally go to www.servermonkey.com and get an R510 or R710 exactly the way you want it. $400-500 seems a LOT for a server that doesn't have exactly what you want/need.
Do you guys love your sit/stand desks? Which brand did you end up going with?
I've been seriously looking at them lately as I've been having some nerve issues and the more I stand the less I hurt.
Still no idea what is going on with this.... The multicast randomly started working again later in the day, but the audio was still broken and could barely understand what was being said.
So I migrated my Elastix install over to FreePBX last night and changed from multicast paging to extension paging groups and it's working flawlessly. Only annoying bit is the announcement tone that gets played before you can talk. We hear all the phones beeping at different times, but once you wait for the beeping to stop, the audio quality is perfect with almost no lag at all. I've changed all the settings in the pbx to no announcement tone, but it's still doing it. I don't know if I need to change settings in my phones or what. Looking into that now.
@jaredbusch I've lost the multicast settings in my switch every time I've rebooted it. I always click the save config button and make sure it's good. I'm not sure if it's a bug? Maybe I'm the only one using this? Who knows?
I can't figure out how to set it up like I have in the past with the massive changes to the GUI from versions 1.0.1 to 1.7.1. I'm guessing it's time for me to learn some CLI stuff.
edit: I've rebooted this switch maybe 3 times in the 3 years I've had it, so it's pretty rare.
Not only did restarting not work, but it completely broke the paging on everything but my PA1... for some reason that's the only device still getting the multicast audio.
Like @jmoore said, it appears to be a guilt trip. I got one of these a while back after repeatedly telling dude I will contact him when I'm ready to move forward. I don't know if I was having a bad day or what, but I was pretty offended and basically told him to GFY...
Hey Nick,
I have not had much success reconnecting with you. It might just be that you don’t have any interest in talking with me -- and that’s okay. I just need to know whether or not to keep trying. So, to make this nice and easy, you can reply with a simple keystroke. Just reply with either A, B, C, D, or E and I’ll know where to go from here, but please do reply so that I can stop emailing you if you’re not interested.
A. I no longer need emails but send me invites for events.
B. No need to follow up we already found another solution.
C. We need to get something done but don't have time, don't give up!
D. I would like to schedule a time to talk.
E. Wait who are you again?
Thank you.
@jaredbusch Everything sounds fine if we call other extensions, it's almost certainly a multicast issue. I'll try rebooting the switch tonight to see if that clears it up, I was just trying to get a feel for if anybody else had ever experienced anything like this.
I've been planning to migrate my Elastix install over to FreePBX for quite some time now, I've got everything setup on FPBX, just haven't had the time to switch everything over. Once I do that I'll try out the extension paging again and maybe get rid of the multicast completely.
@scottalanmiller I don't page to the SIP extensions, I broadcast the "paging" over multicast and the phones are always listening for that unless they're busy. Please excuse me if I'm not explaining it correctly lol I don't understand exactly how it works.
I can't remember exactly why I didn't do paging through the PBX to extensions, but I want to say there was a ridiculous lag doing it that way.
This config in every phone, and our Snom PA1
@black3dynamite There is only one speaker for our shop, the rest of the paging is through our Yealink phones, which have the same quality issues, but only while paging. Everything else with the phones works just fine.
It is a pure LAN, and I highly doubt the network is saturated. The admin page is showing 95% CPU utilization on the switch, and GUI seems really sluggish compared to the old version... Nothing has really changed at all on my network except for that firmware update. Maybe I'll try rolling back if the reboot doesn't fix it.
We've been using multicast paging at our shop for about 3 years and have never had a problem until recently. The audio has been severely breaking up over the past week or so. I assume it's a switching issue, and I haven't had a chance to reboot my switch yet. Is there anything else that might be causing these problems? Any logs or performance stats to look at? Side note, I just updated my Ubiquiti Edgeswitch from version 1.0.1 to 1.7.1 about a month ago, maybe that had something to do with this?
We've used some RFIdeas stuff in the past.
The one we have used basically returns keystrokes corresponding to a matched card. If my card is detected, it would fire the keystrokes for my username and password. You don't need to centrally manage anything as you write the credentials to the card and the reader is just the interface. If they lose the card or need a password change, you give them a new card or rewrite the existing card. Not sure how any of this plays with HIPAA stuff though...
They also have USB proximity sensors for auto-logout if that's something else you want.
