@gjacobse What's the cost on something like that?
"Materials for an enclosed 20U server rack came out to just under $400. For an open rack it was only about $100 including casters."

Probably several hundred dollars.

the problem with any business class servers though, for me, is noise.

Yeah, that can be a big issue in a small living space!

I was amazed at how much quiter my new (2015) server was than my old servers.
Of course, that is just one.

I'm fortunate enough that my house is large enough and arranged in the "right ways" so that I barely hear my server.

Yeah I could put a setup like this in my HVAC room and probably be OK.

You have a room in your house just for the HVAC equipment, I guess I am a plebeian...

I do as well. It's called the basement.

Basements don't count because so do I.
I was thinking something drywalled, and finished for something that maybe get 5 minutes of attention a month. (to change the filters)

Eh? My basement has three rooms - storage/HVAC, bathroom, and the rest is open area do whatever.
This is how I see many basements.

Well it is a drywalled off area with extra storage and it's own door. But again, this is typical around here.

I know a guy who built his own blade unit. Wooden blade enclosure and some simply power supplies and his own fans, then made it allow straight motherboards to slide in so that it make having a handful of systems running in a cluster super cheap. Pointless for production, but for a lab was very interesting.
