a downside to ownCloud

I love ownCloud and use it in a number of places where it fits perfectly for the business.
But the initial sync with the Windows client just sucks balls.
I have a folder shared with read only permissions to the service technicians at one client.
The folder has about 30GB of data which is not very large in the grand scheme of things, but there is an ass ton of individual files.
Approximately 45,000 files in 1,600 folders.The initial sync discovery takes forever.
You would think that the client should be smart enough to know that it is doing an initial sync and to just pull everything.
Especially as there is no supported method for pre-seeding a directory anyway.
This takes approximately 20 minutes of discovery before it starts downloading files.

Oddly... I never really use the sync client. The webapp and webdav shares work perfectly for what I need to do.

I tried it out the other day, I thought it was lame to look at a photo (on the phone app) it had to download the photo.

I use the sync client for this because these laptops are often offline while accessing the documents.

That makes sense. Different use case then what I had used in the past. Great option to have.

I did use the sync client as a type of "backup" before. I re-installed my OS but left that drive the same and when I reinstalled the software and pointed to that location it only synced files that didn't exist or had a newer time stamp. Maybe you could copy from another computer to do this?

Even if it works (and it is not a supported method), It means I have to have a local seed. Why would I want to have a local seed copy someplace? It just becomes one more thing to maintain.
The better solution is for an initial sync to know that it is an initial sync with empty folders and just start puling data instead of "checking for changes" to files that do not exist.

Not used the client but would a feature request be a button that lets you do that when adding the OwnCloud server to the client? Little tick box somewhere?

The client checks if the target directory is not empty and warns you about it. So it knows already.
