SmartFile shared a link to their blog that I saw today with a nice Recap of FTP, FTPS and SFTP technologies. I often find that these need to be explained and this was a good write up on them.

You can think of it this way:

FTP/S is FTP over SSL just like HTTPS is HTTP over SSL.

SFTP is actually unrelated to the FTP family and is just a file transfer component of the SSH suite.

Interesting. I'm guessing moden FTP clients support SFTP, even though it isn't FTP, it is a transfer protocol and the end user doesn't care that it's not real FTP.. blah blah blah...

Most people use SFTP clients like Filezilla and WinSCP that also use legacy FTP. WinSCP's name is even a reference to SCP, SFTP's sister file copy protocol inside the SSH suite.

I usually just use WinSCP. Filezilla always feels sluggish to me.

WinSCP is good and easy to use.

And both can be deployed from Chocolatey.

I'm partial to Filezilla. Mostly I just like the interface. Never really tried WinSCP. FZ is pretty comfortable to use.

I use Filezilla. My dad uses WinSCP. Six of one, half dozen of the other. I think WinSCP is more secure, some people have complained about security design choices in Filezilla but nothing I'm worried about.
