CloneZilla moving to a smaller disk

This started as a topic in What are you doing now.
I found this list of instructions on how to use Clonezilla to move from a larger disk to a smaller one, assuming the data is less than the smaller drive.

down vote"Pseudo-cloning" of a larger hard drive to smaller one may be accomplished by using Clonezilla. Effectively you can save and restore the disk's partitions. The following steps (developed for HDD to SSD transfer) will get you there:
(1) The first trick is to use Gparted to resize the partitions on the hard drive, shrinking each partition so as to reduce the amount of unused space it contains. Obviously, the partitions must be sized such that the total space required for all the partitions is less than the capacity of the SSD.
(2) One then runs Clonezilla and makes a copy of the individual hard disk partitions (using the saveparts option), storing these temporarily on an external USB drive. Note that it is necessary to save the partitions (saveparts) rather than making an image of the entire disk (savedisk).
(3) With the SSD installed in the target machine, the second trick is to use the partition manager once more to create the desired partition structure on the SSD.
(4) Clonezilla is then used to restore the saved partitions (using restoreparts) onto the SSD.
See: "Cloning” a hard drive to a smaller SSD for more discussion on the process and a number of links for reference sources.

Crappy workaround. There should be an option in the clone disk dialog to basically do this as long as used partition sizes are small enough.

Too much trouble. I'd just use something else.

In the past, I've created same-sized VHD's in Windows, cloned to it (albeit not with Clonezilla) and then shrunk the VHD afterwards. It's not the fastest procedure in the world, but it works.

i want only to inform you about my experience with clonezilla, it is very risky to use it, couple of weeks ago i tried to take a system image of one of my workstation, after doing so: the system cannot boot, i lost everything and i was obliged to format the computer, it was really a bad experience believe me guys

I don't know what it is with CloneZilla, when I use it I have to copy the drive twice. The first time will never boot, but the second time everything works fine.

I've been using it to clone machines for 7 years. In that time I've probably cloned nearly 200 times and probably had problems 2 or 3 times.
@IT-ADMIN , are you using any of the special switches during your cloning?

sorry, what do you mean by switch here ??

only one time i clone a workstation to a network shared folder and after cloning the system cannot be booted

when you are running clonezilla, you can pick options (-p or -ick, etc) this are called switches or options.

thank Allah it was not a server
