True, true. And everything is situational. But here are some thoughts that at least apply a lot of the time:
- We are talking about people with plenty of time to post pointless threads to show off their bad decisions and look for kudos, but lack time to post a question to find out what should be done?
- How long does posting a question in a forum or looking up other threads take?
- Are these people really requesting consultants?
- Instead of turning to sales people, why are they not simply adding the work to their workload like anything else? No matter how much work I am assigned, calling someone that doesn't work for us to see if they will do it for me would never even cross my mind. I would simply tell management that there is a backlog of work and that is that.

I've had posts moderated in the water cooler section... really there doesn't need to be a moderator for that section... i think someone was just on a power trip.

Yeah, I disliked that one because I know why it was said - not because it was another newbie posting the same mistakes without having taken any effort to know what the accumulated community knowledge was, but because we were trying to inform that newbie of that knowledge. He was basically "Oh brother, here we go again not just congratulating someone and not holding them to a high standard."
Which I understand why people are tired of the bar being held high, but likewise, we are tired of people asking the same questions and making the same mistakes without learning. It's not a rare one, this. It comes up, quite literally, daily. So it isn't like he would have to had stuck around. ANY effort would have shown him that this would have been the response. An algorithm could have done the response, it is so canned by now.

Absolutely - and I did see some of the thread - Scott and Dustin where their normal selves (I would have been too if I had posted). The problem with forums is a lack of emotional balance from ton, facial expressions, etc.
Take that piled on with millennials wanting to be coddled all the time, and we have an overly sensitive situation.
It does take an overly large amount of effort to write a post that while not being PC is also not potentially viewed as condescending or any other adjective you want to use.

I took a few asshatty comments when I first came here, and then realized...Hey, nothing personal. I'm sure anyone here would have a drink after acting like an asshat. It's what we do.

This poor guy inherited a setup with a failed RAID 5 array and no working backup system. The array rebuilt but the filesystem had corrupted during the extended array failure. Whoever was there before him really set that company up well.
