SQL Monitoring and Management Tool

I have a new role to manager our SQL Servers. My manager has authorized me to shop around for a 3rd party management tool that can help me with my new hat. I am pretty new to SQL. I worked with Microsoft over the past week and a half to resolve some issues on one of our SQL servers. I learned alot, but I still have alot to learn.

Being new to SQL I don't quite understand all the advantages of using the tools. I've used other 3rd party management tools for Active Directory, Server monitoring, and etc. in the past so I do know the big potential advantage of 3rd party tools.
I'd like to ask a few questions about the various tools.
How do you use the monitoring and how do is it make you more proactive?
How does the backup management work vs using Microsoft's built in backup tool?
Do you still use a Microsoft maintenance plan or does the 3rd party tool do that for you?
What other advantages do 3rd party tools have? -
Personal, I would try to learn the built in tools, and not use a third party tool.
What version of SQL? Free or Paid?

Red Gate is definitely the best know of the SQL Server tools.

I love Red Gate. Their stuff is certainly not free, but ever piece of their software I have purchased has been well worth the cost.
