Adding Desktop Notifications
-
Something we have been missing, that a lot of people would like, I think, is desktop notifications to alert us when someone has posted something to ML. We just added this functionality to ML and if you refresh your browsers you should see the browser ask you if you would like to allow notifications. If you say yet the HTML5 API will be used to alert you to new posts being made. Don't do this if you don't want ML to become intrusive, as it will. But if you want to be able to keep up, it is great.
This was by request of @g-jacobse so don't blame me on this one

Yessssssss.
-
Kinda nice.
-
It is going to get really annoying, really quickly for me, I think.
-
Is it easy to disable?
-
Most browsers have a relatively simple "here is a list of the sites that are allowed to do this" thing where you can turn a site on and off.
-
For those working from archaic browsers.... IE does not support desktop notifications. So you are out of luck.
-
Do we have a way to turn it off per thread? Or is there an ignore thread switch somewhere?

At the top is an unwatch button.

AWESOME!
Thanks!@coliver

Yeah, this will be interesting.
FYI, lately, before the update, I noticed my unread box would rarely refresh, but the notices for me specifically would update.
-
This seems like it will be good but is going to take some getting used to.
-
I really want this on mobile. and some kind of instant email, maybe. I'm not so sure I want the email notifications. I used to think I wanted them for sure a year ago. But now I'm starting to even hate the SW email notifications.

In theory, this new update works on mobile. Or so it says in the GitHub page. Doubtful that it works for Windows Phones, though.

Considering it is IE No. But with Windows Phone 10 that might change.

It amuses me that I noticed the indicator on my chrome tab, switched back to the site because of it, and this thread was on the top of the list that triggered the new notification.

Windows 10 with IE is not working for @art_of_shred so I'm finding it unlikely for at least the time being.

This is where it all comes together.

I never got prompted for it in Chrome. is the notification sound going to be fixed too? I've never gotten that to work.

Working for me now.
