Coronavirus in Illinois: Pritzker closes all bars, restaurants for dining in as state cases rise to 93

Coronavirus: Germany latest country to close borders
Germany has become the latest country to close borders as European nations try to stem the spread of the coronavirus.
Its borders with France, Austria and Switzerland were shut on Monday, except for commercial traffic. Spain will also close its borders later while France is considering more stringent lockdowns. Meanwhile, the European Commission has proposed a temporary ban on non-essential travel to the European Union. The measure would initially last for 30 days, and long-term residents in the EU, family members of EU nationals and diplomats would be exempt as well as cross-border and healthcare workers and people transporting goods. -
Here is what out school district is doing.
Andy DuRoss, Superintendent
(847) 357-5000 | http://sd54.orgDear District 54 Community,
As you know, on Friday Illinois Governor Pritzker announced the mandatory closure of all public schools through March 30. While our staff would prefer to be at school, interacting in person with your children, we know this is the right decision to keep our community healthy and safe.
Please know that the closure may continue beyond March 30. The situation is incredibly fluid, and the state is waiting to announce what will happen after March 30 until we get closer to that date.
Because this statewide closure was mandated, all of the days are considered Act of God Days in Illinois, and therefore will not be made up at the end of the school year. However, school districts across the state are encouraged to provide virtual learning opportunities for students.
Today was an institute day in District 54 so that we could train our employees on the new District 54 Virtual Learning platform, which will allow us to provide continuous instruction to the more than 15,000 students we serve during these unique times.
Timeline
March 17: closed for the elections as previously planned.
March 18-20: first week of virtual learning
March 23-27: spring break
March 30: virtual learning day
District 54 V-Learning Platform
On Wednesday morning, students will be able to visit the D54 V-Learning Website. Once you are on the site, click on the link that corresponds to your child’s age group and watch the welcome video. The website also contains a parent guide, a student guide and frequently asked questions.
Junior high V-Learning classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and students will follow their current schedule (including a break for lunch).
Elementary school and Lincoln Prairie classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Early Learning Center students can also visit the site with a trusted adult at any time. Students brought home bags last week to compliment the Choose Your Own Adventure virtual learning platform designed for their age group.
Since these classes are virtual and we understand that this schedule may not work for some families, students have the flexibility to complete tasks at any time. However, students participating during these V-Learning times will be able to interact in real time with their teachers. Student work during this time will not be graded.
All students in kindergarten through eighth grade should have brought home their District 54 iPads and Chromebooks on Friday. For those families who do not have Internet access at home, please email [email protected].
Reporting 2019 Novel Coronavirus
If your child is sick and cannot participate, please email your school principal. It is especially important for us to track illnesses while the COVID-19 virus is spreading in our state.
Students Receiving Free Lunch
Thank you to everyone inquiring about how we can continue to support our students receiving free and reduced lunch. We have a plan in place to distribute food to these children, and their families have been contacted directly. Anyone wishing to donate food, may drop off nonperishable food items at our administration center, 524 E. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg, Monday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m. throughout the shutdown of school.
Thank you again for working with us, as we all do our part to prevent the spread of this virus in our community. As I’ve stated before, these are unprecedented times, but in District 54 we will continue doing what we do best – caring for our students and ensuring their academic success.
Sincerely,
Superintendent Andy DuRoss

Walmart pickup & delivery service in response to Covid-19
As the coronavirus situation continues to evolve, we know it’s top-of-mind for you. We see it in the items you’re buying and hear it in the conversations we’re having in our stores. Please be assured we’re working as hard as we can to take care of you and your family.
As the situation continues to change, we’re taking action to better serve you.
Associate support
Your health and our associates’ health is our top priority. We’ve asked any associate who feels unwell to stay home, and we’ve set a new policy to support any associate who may be affected by the virus—including paid leave for any associate who needs to self-quarantine.Store hours & sanitation
We’re taking extra measures to ensure a clean and healthy environment in our stores. We’re dedicating associates in every store to sanitize high-traffic, high-touch areas, like registers and shopping carts. To better support our associates and serve you, we’ve adjusted our operating hours. As of Sunday, March 15, Walmart stores and Neighborhood Markets have reduced hours to help ensure associates are able to stock the products our customers are looking for and to sanitize the stores. As such, pickup & delivery hours for all stores will be shortened as well. Check the store finder on our site or app to verify your local store’s pickup & delivery hours.
No-contact pickup & delivery
To help protect you and our associates during pickup, you may ask the associate to sign for the order on your behalf. This means you do not have to touch the associate’s keypad to accept your order. For delivery orders, drivers will practice social distancing when picking up your order at the store. The driver will stay in the car while the pickup associate loads the order into the driver’s vehicle.
In addition, no-contact delivery to your home will be available next week. Through this option, you can authorize the driver to leave the order at your door, and you won’t need to sign on the driver’s phone to accept your order.
Available inventory
We’ve seen a significant increase in demand for products such as paper goods and cleaning supplies. As we work to replenish these items as fast as possible, we’ll limit the quantity that can be ordered to ensure as many customers as possible have access to these items. When we see items run out at the store, we’ll temporarily remove them from the website to ensure we’re accurately reflecting what is available.
Ordering ahead
To help ensure we can get you the items you ordered, we’ve shortened the time frame you can order ahead to two days (i.e., today and tomorrow). If your nearby Walmart does not have available times to place an order, please continue to check back with us—new time slots open up every morning.Order delays & cancellations
Due to high demand, our pickup & delivery service may experience order delays, cancellations, or higher wait times during pickup. We’ll stay in contact with you over email, text message, website, and mobile app to alert you of any potential delays or increased wait times at your store. We ask that you provide your phone number during checkout to ensure that you receive important updates about your order. In addition, we recommend that you use the mobile app to check-in on your way to the store and enter your parking spot number once you arrive. This will help reduce wait times for everyone.
Lastly, please be assured we are actively monitoring the situation with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and our Chief Medical Officer, and we will adjust our policies as conditions change. You may learn more about our efforts here.
Please be well and stay safe.
Thank you,
Walmart -

I would be doing that even without COVID-19.

Italy coronavirus deaths rise by record 475 in a day
The number of people dying from coronavirus in Italy has risen by 475 in one day to nearly 3,000 - the biggest increase since the outbreak.
There are a total of 35,713 confirmed cases in the country, with more than 4,000 having successfully recovered. Lombardy, the worst-hit region, recorded 319 deaths in one day. Italy is the world's worst affected country after China, where the virus originated last year. At least 8,758 people have died, most in China. The vast majority of the more than 200,000 confirmed cases - 80% - have occurred in Europe and the Western Pacific region, which includes much of Asia, the World Health Organization (WHO) says. -
Coronavirus: Italy's death toll overtakes China's
Coronavirus has killed more people in Italy than in any other country, after deaths there rose by 427 in a day.
The number of deaths now stands at 3,405, which is more than in China where the virus originated last year. There have been 3,245 reported deaths in China, but there have been questions over the reliability of its data. A lockdown imposed on 12 March in Italy has been extended beyond the original 25 March end date. Nearly all Italians have been told to stay at home. Despite these measures, the number of new cases and deaths has continued to spiral. There have been 220,000 cases of the virus worldwide with more than 9,000 deaths. -

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how to take this... Many people "die from the flu" actually die from pneumonia, not the flu. But, I'm guessing they might never have gotten pneumonia had they not already been weakened by the flu... so which is really to blame?

Exactly. Sounds like the HIV/AIDS thing. HIV never kills you, it just makes you weak so that ANYTHING else kills you.

COVID-19 is severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It can kill on its own as it is a respiratory illness. But for anyone without other health issues, those respiratory effects are typically not life threatening. Note, the "typically" thre, because like any illness, it can affect some in extreme ways.
