That's not how authority works, that's how society likes to make you think it works. Some random person says "authority" and you just accept it. That's really just marketing.

Media is authority just like anyone else. So there you go, you answered your own question. Some random authority figure that you do or do not recognize as authority for your personal purposes says that they know who it is.
All authority is at the basis of personal opinion and, often, determined solely by meeting personal goals.
