So Laura and I went to see an apartment this weekend that is much closer to work. It's an extra $400 a month for an apartment that is half the size of our current one. It's to be expected though. The further north you go in NJ the higher the prices. This place bases their leases on market value, whether your windows face the parking lot or trees, current amount of vacancies, etc. I asked them what the cost of living has been historically from the lowest to the highest and they said 10% - 20% per year. Wat? My current place goes up by $50 each year. This place could possibly be $4,000 more next year? It seems like our choices are either affordable unsafe areas or unaffordable safe areas. I've lived in crappy areas before myself but I can't do that with Laura around. Really frustrating situation. I asked her to find places with her ideal pricing and she found 4 places with high crime rates. Ughhhh.

If you are happy where you are at, don't move. The commute sucks, but being safe and having affordable housing sucks less. 😄

It ends up costing us a lot just in gas and car maintenance. I'm driving an hour each way every day.

But probably not $400 a month in Gas and car maintenance?

This is another option, move out of NJ.

Laura is a state worker and HAS to live in NJ. It's a condition of her employment.

Who says she has to keep working for the state of NJ?

As Scott would say - that's sunk cost fallacy. 😉

It's her dream job. The exact position where she can excel most and be the most happy. I'm just not going to take that away from her

Every place raises rent unless you're rent controlled but a 20% increase is insane.

Agreed. I'd opt to have something in my rental contact about keeping the price set for a year or two.

Wtf? How is that possible? Sounds like you need to invest in a new car. I have a 2014 Forester I put 60 miles on a day... I still don't hit 400$ every month even when gas is included. Sounds like you need to start changing your own oil.

I spend $400 on average every 1.5 months on maintenance alone. not even including gas

Wtf? How is that possible? Sounds like you need to invest in a new car. I have a 2014 Forester I put 60 miles on a day... I still don't hit 400$ every month even when gas is included. Sounds like you need to start changing your own oil.

I put 70-100 miles on it a day

So the only gotcha about the new place is that they could raise the rates on you every year?

Every place raises rent unless you're rent controlled but a 20% increase is insane.

Every place probably can - but the last place I had before I purchased didn't raise my rent for the 7 years I was there.
I too have a hybrid - I put 40+ miles a day on my car - what are your fees?

And I pay someone to put oil in my car. ($90/change) what are your fess that are costing you so much? Are they putting a new air filter in every time? and flushing the coolant every time? This definitely seems excessive.

I spend $400 on average every 1.5 months on maintenance alone. not even including gas

I'll look over the receipts and let you know specifically. This time (Thursday) I'm getting new tires so its going to be expensive.

That's probably for the best... it really sounds like you are being taken advantage of.... shop around for different mechanics.

Wtf? How is that possible? Sounds like you need to invest in a new car. I have a 2014 Forester I put 60 miles on a day... I still don't hit 400$ every month even when gas is included. Sounds like you need to start changing your own oil.

I put 70-100 miles on it a day

I have an Aveo right now (they're known to be s***), driving it ~70 miles a day, and I don't put $400 a month into the thing, gas and maintenance included!

It's $400 every 1.5 months for maintenance. Part of the fees being higher is because i have a hybrid.

Oh, so you really don't like keeping money in your pocket. Have you had to replace the battery pack yet?

No I think I hit that at 60k or something. I need to check my manual. 😞

That's going to be a big bill.... it's why I just don't consider electric or hybrid ready yet.
