My wife is Japanese, so it really goes without saying, that we will have dishes with rice often.

None of the rice outside of Japan is the same due to Japan's strict policy and high tariffs on rice. That is driven by a heavily vested political faction and is one of the big issues with Japan joining the TPP.
That said, we buy the 15# bags of Nishiki medium grain rice from http://www.globalfoodsmarket.com/directory.htm
