@PhlipElder nobody said they bought a house - it said they bought property. Easy to find a plot of undeveloped land for $26k. And yes, out in the sticks you can get a shitbox of a house for that little.

Same page. There's some neighbourhoods that a complete property could be purchased for that.

Outlying rural areas out here one can buy an 1/8th with a home for about $25K.
