Today I was talking to a guy at Staples who came in to return a router that his son bought due to intermittent wireless connectivity issues. It was a Netgear N750, so I helped him pick out a Netgear N600 Gigabit to replace it. Anyways, it was early-ish in the morning and he and I started talking. I mentioned how I had also had some issues with the Netgears and wireless but that dd-wrt was how I'd solved it. I had picked up he was a little more technical, and was also sure to inform him it may void the manufacturer's warranty doing that, but it was an awesome workaround for a lot of issues.
I don't remember how, but I started talking about how I'd worked at Staples a little over a year and a half ago and told him about some of my other jobs and experience in IT. After a couple minutes, he looked at me and goes "So why are you here?!" with a look of disbelief. I laughed and told him I genuinely enjoyed the job and liked bringing a level of experience that you almost never find in retail to the table, which I enjoy using to help the average person get good solutions to their IT problems.
After I say that, he tells me how he runs a computer repair shop, which he also owns, and has for the past 15 years just north of where the store is. He said he's been coming to this Staples for a little bit now and how no one he ever talked to was, according to him, competent. However, at this point, he tells me that there are times that he is either too far geographically to assist some person or is just unable to for some other reason, and even though we're technically competition, he told me that if that comes up, he will be sending people to see ME. He pointed right at me as he said that.
The best part was that right after that he turned about 130 degrees to face my GM, who was about 10 feet away down the aisle. He shook his hand and told him, and I quote, "you finally have someone who knows what they're talking about". This was both awesome because it's only my second day back at Staples, and it was a very nice boost to my own self-esteem, which has taken some major hits lately.
I know it sounds like I'm bragging, but it was just such an awesome experience. Combined with the fact I had several customers tell me how much they enjoyed working with me and how they felt confident with their buying decisions based on my advice, and today was a very good day.

It never fails.. Everyime I've gotten on here there's a new post from you for me to shake my head at.. Seriously, do you think trash talking companies, co-workers and former co-workers is how to be liked in the IT community? It's not. Most job will search your online profiles.
And this is very condescending to @scottalanmiller. Even if you don't agree with his style or opinion's you can disagree with them without disrespecting him.

I don't think that he meant it that way. Just the the mystique is lost in person.

This is exactly right. I still have the utmost respect and admiration for @scottalanmiller as a person and an IT Guru. I just wouldn't want to work with him again. XD

Just wanted to give a shout-out to the best boss I ever had, @Minion-Queen. The very close second is my original sales manager from Staples but Danielle still takes the cake.

Ask @scottalanmiller if he thinks I'm trash talking him. He already has responded that clearly he doesn't. Besides, your comment about "being liked" made me chuckle. I stopped trying to be liked by everyone a LONG time ago. No, there are plenty of people who like me for me. I don't mask most of what I have to say, and believe it or not, but I do refrain from saying quite a bit because it's not appropriate/beneficial/etc to anyone.
I stopped trying to say what everyone wanted to hear a long time ago, and rather switched to a policy of unbridled honesty. It makes enemies. It burns some bridges. But it hasn't hurt me from a job perspective as of yet, and while I appreciate you seeming to think I'm shooting myself in the foot, due to the tone of your comments, I started toning a lot of your criticisms out a long time ago. I still read them, but in a different light.
But in the spirit of the thread, thank you for your advice.

@nadnerB He's serious, but it almost sounds like he's not.
