It seems that all to often here of late, when people call they don't leave information that is really important....a phone number to call them back on.

While a person can be told x, y, z, they will sometimes forget and just remember x and y. But does anyone have or use a script to record their voice message? Or have suggestions on something short, simple, and meaningful?

      Thanks

Thanks for calling... but if you really want to reach me, send me an email so we can schedule a time.

Same here. If someone calls me without arranging it ahead of time it means that they didn't really mean to reach me.

I use something along the lines of "You've reached A.J. Stringham. Sorry I'm unavailable but if you'll leave your name, best contact number, and a brief message with the reason for your call, I'll try to follow-up as quickly as possible." Don't say phone number, because people will just default to a desk phone or something they never answer. By saying best contact number, it tells them you actually want to contact them and that you don't have the time nor patience to play phone tag. Usually you get a cellphone that way. It's worked for me quite well.

Mine is "Hello, you've reached the voicemail of the IT Department, please leave a message and we'll get back to you".

Honestly, if they're so stupid that they need instructions on how to leave a message (like telling them to leave a number), then I really don't want to talk to them. Then again, my voicemail system records the number they're calling from anyway, so it's generally not required.

Not that I ever phone anyone back anyway. I'm an e-mail only kind of guy.
