Gummersbach, Germany Drops Windows for Linux
-
Another German city, this time Gummersbach (near Dusseldorf), has dropped Windows in favor of a Linux desktop environment. Gummersbach has decided to use a MATE desktop.
Recently it was announced that German powerhouse Hamburg is looking to switch from Windows to Linux as well.

Very cool.

Once a few places do this, it becomes the thing to do. I think that the German central government is being really supportive of this initiative but this means that there is a high likelihood of it slowly rolling across Europe.

@Reid-Cooper Didn't I see an article a month or two back where a city that did this very thing regretted it and had to switch back to Windows?

@Bill-Kindle If I remember correctly it was a politician lamenting the decisions of his predecessors. I don't think there was any technical backing to the complaint. Although I would have to look it up again to make sure.

Yes, it was a false article. A lot of anti-Linux people are desperate to discredit the successes of these programs so they get one or two people who are inevitably grumpy about any change and get them to say that it was a failure. You could get this for any change in any company, it doesn't mean anything.
Munchen has been very much moving forward and there is no thought of falling back.

Excellent. These stories are very encouraging.
