Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Configuration Manager) licensing
-
I'm trying to wrap my head around the licensing required for a new Configuration Manager (Microsoft Endpoint Manager) deployment.
It looks like Configuration Manager is now no longer a part of System Center, and most of the documentation I've found only talks about scenarios of using Current Branch Configuration Manager for those with existing System Center licensing.
It appears that the licensing is attached to Microsoft 365 offerings like E5. This makes sense to me as far as licensing end-user devices managed with Configuration Manager. I'm trying to figure out how server VMs, which would be managed with Configuration Manager would be licensed.
From what I've seen from the Product Terms site, it looks like the licensing looks more traditional: Licensing the cores of the hypervisor host(s) where the VMs are running combined with client management licenses.
We had SCCM where I worked before; however, licensing was 2+ layers of management abstraction away from me, so I never had a chance to see the actual agreements we had with Microsoft. Also the product terms link was for MSPA. Like with my last job, I have no way (currently) to see what our current licensing program is.
Have any of you licensed a new deployment of Configuration Manager since the change of it being spun out of System Center?

@eddiejennings are you too far down this road to use something else?

Pretty much On-High is wanting Configuration Manager. Frankly, I like the product as well, I just don't know the licensing requirements for a new deployment.

I may be able to ask the team here that deals with that side —

There's a good bit of dysfunction going on, such as two weeks after starting to look into what's needed for configuration manager there's still no authoritative answer on "talk to this person to see what Microsoft licensing we have."
I'm trying to get an idea of what's needed myself, and most of what I found is in relation to those who already have System Center and having current SA entitles you to Configuration Manager Current Branch.
