Registrar Dotster when domains expire

A friend's companies domain recently expired, it was registered through Dotster.
Upon expiration Dotster redirected all traffic to their own servers, then forwarded the traffic onto the original DNS entries.
At first this appeared that someone else might have bought the domain and setup a MiTM attack, luckily it was the registrar hoping in the middle.I don't really consider this a good solution, what do you guys think?
They have a FAQ on this

and it does mention they will redirect the website to an expired page, but nothing about redirecting everything through their own servers, then onto the expected ones. -

Never heard of them. Why not move the registration over to Cloudflare?

I'm sure they are considering new options in light of this.

Who the heck is Dotster and why do companies use obscure, unknown vendors for key functionality?

Not hopping in the middle. It was a registrar taking advantage of paying for the customer's domain and offsetting the cost of doing so by doing something with it while they were stuck paying for it after the customer abandoned it. It's nothing like them hopping in the middle, the customer is "hopping in the middle" to try to get it back.

Honestly I think it is a great solution. They could just sell it off to the customer's competitors immediately and make way more money. Anything other than that and the customer should be on their knees kissing the feet of the registrar for protecting them from themselves.

Doesn't need to, shouldn't be expected to.
