Laptop trying to factory reset itself
-
Anyone know why a laptop would factory reset itself? I opened my laptop this morning and I got the choose keyboard layout screen (windows 10). The only thing I have installed in a month has been chocolaty.
-
maybe it's going through the setup after 1903 install?

I'm finishing up a 1903 upgrade right now. I'll see if it does this...
-
I doubt it...
This definitely is an odd one. I suppose it's possible for malware to be the issue, but I doubt it. Are you on an insiders build?
Is your machine going through a Windows Reset sort of reset or the manufacturer factory reset? -

not likely, old laptop from years before she was in IT and she doesn't do Windows stuff.
-
Maybe F11 is sticking? Lol
-
Maybe it's Windows?

This laptop is going through the "This may take several minutes" screen but so far no prompt for selecting a keyboard.
-
@WLS-ITGuy Ah ok. If it seems to stall on that screen, let's make sure the computer is completely off.
So hold the power button down for 10 seconds, unplug and take the battery out.Put the battery back in, plug in the power, and turn it back on.
Since it's an older laptop, maybe make several sandwiches or knit a sweater or two. -

No keyboard prompt after the above finished.

-
@WLS-ITGuy I'm so confused lmao!
I think I got it though, so it's not factory resetting itself, it's just stalling on the 1903 screen?
Or is the installation of 1903 just a step in troubleshooting? -
Yeah, the 1903 update seems the most likely culprit.

It's giving me system recovery or checkup options. I'll run the checkup but at this point I'll put Fedora on it. #FUWindows

Windows: "But muh vidya games!"

@mary I've had 3 updates give me grief. In the repair utility, I went to the commandline and ran a chkdsk (insert driver letter here): /r once I verified on which drive the OS was located in the repair utility. It seemed to work. After, I ran DISM and sfc
-
@kamidon right! Seriously though, I'm running sfc/scannow to see if it will show anything

@mary I had to chkdsk before I could get it to settle down. Not sure why.
