Expensive, a pain to run, sometimes confusing to make sure you are getting the right media, connectors, adapters, etc. But mostly it just works the same as copper tech.
The biggest problem with optical fiber is that people see it as a pound of lead.... heavier than a pound of feathers. There is something about lead and fiber that make people forget that a pound is a pound, and that 1GigE is 1GigE. The misconceptions around fiber are astounding.

umm maybe a decade ago...
Fiber is cheap and not all that complicated to have terminated anymore. For many runs, it is purchased pre-terminated.
While there may not be a single global standard like the RJ connector for ethernet, you will only typically see the duplex LC connector unless you get deep into network design.

Fiber is cheap and not all that complicated to have terminated anymore.We've been called in because dev firms and their normal IT support could not figure out the parts and connectors. It might seem easy to you and me, but to a normal SMB without a dedicated networking team, it's often hella confusing.

@JaredBusch You are refering just to the Fiber Patch Cord, it came terminated, but what about all the fiber wiring you must to deploy from Point A to Point B, that is something you must plan, 6, 8, 12 pairs, Monomode or Multimode, it will depends of your requirements, but that requires "fiber fusion" and terminals, in some cases, techs do the fiber fusion well but the connectors are "dirty" or bad, making connection not well done. (This is just example, what I had experienced).
You just plug the patch cord to its connector and have connectivy, but most of the cases there is "lost" in connection.

The point was that it is cheaper to buy pre-terminated fiber in the lengths needed instead of buying fiber and getting it terminated.
Not that does not apply universally. It does apply for most office buildings.

Where he is, I have random conversations with people who are like "Oh yeah, I trenched across town myself." Things you never hear here. There is actually a lot of self termination, lol.
