Its is okay to sync/delete often from Cloud Storage?
-
Hi,
I am talking about AWS S3 and Backblaze B2
I notice that when you delete files like purging of old backup jobs you get charged abit for the deletion. So this got me thinking should I not delete ?
I have Backup that backups 60 GB every sunday/tuesday/thursday, and to keep only max of 3 files, the same will reflect on the cloud due to rclone sync option.
My question is do you delete files often from cloud storage buckets or just keep them is cheaper ?

@Emad-R Keep them around according to your retention policy.
If no retention policy, write one yesterday.
The charge for deleting a file is generally cheap as well. I don't think B2 charges for deleting/removing files, so you might want to move everything out of S3. If you want 2 places to put backups in a "cloud", use Wasabi and B2. Wasabi is the cheapest online storage solution so far.

Keeping them is not cheaper. You pay for capacity. Maybe not much, but you do, and eventually everything has to be deleted. So that deletion cost isn't going away, it's just put off. Think of paying for the storage then being like paying the minimum balance on a credit card. You pay to delay paying the full amount, but that full amount is going to get paid sooner or later. The sooner you pay it, the less you pay overall.

I don't believe that there is any charge for Wasabi deletions.

What are your retention time frames? From what I can tell, anything passing the 90-day mark on Amazon isn't going to generate a deletion fee.

From what I can tell, Wasabi only charges for storage. There are no egress or deletion fees.

Correct, same here. Unless you have the old accounts where they did charge for egress.
