Wi-Fi Enabled Sprinkler Controller

My thoughts exactly. The main reason he wants it is because it is on the edge of the property, across the parking lot. I don't even know if they are designed to be used outdoors or if they are only for garage/indoor use.

@wrx7m Can your wifi reach that far? If not, then back to the conventional controller you go.

Start by looking at your local fire codes. Do they even allow wireless controlled sprinkler systems?
Really? WTF....
I was assuming fire suppression sprinkler systems. . . not the yard variety of sprinkler systems. . .
Sorry for not being clear. Generally, you would assume it was more business in nature. Sadly, I get these types of requests more often than I should.

So, who is this "guy" who insists on deciding on new network attached items? C-level? Your boss? Manager of any kind? Or just some loudmouth who read some marketing material or saw a commercial on HGTV? How lazy does one have to be to not be able to make it to the edge of this property? Is this parking lot the size of the Mojave desert or something?

I told him no, but he went out there and said he got a signal.

Reduce your power on your AP's.
Problem solved.

Hopefully those are controlled directly by heat

That complicates things. Write up an estimate to expand the wifi and all the network config it will take to get it running, then show them the dollar amount. They might change their minds. If not, you work for imbeciles.

Just because he can pick up the signal does not mean that he can communicate with the signal. Communication is a 2-way street.

@rojoloco He is also the guy that told everyone that they should have XBMC on their laptops to stream "free" movies and TV shows. I get to look like the dick for taking it off.

So he's the guy that is going to get everyone arrested for pirating stuff? Because that is one way of getting arrested for pirating stuff.
-
@nerdydad - Yeah, that was several years ago when I first started working here and I put a stop to it. Also, locked down all systems to user-level access only. That was one of the best things I have done to improve system reliability and security.
-
It's a sprinkler, if this is easy to do and secure, whatever. If it is a problem, skip it. How often does someone need to manage the sprinkler?

Wait, they watch movies and shows at work? What kind of workplace is that?

My kind of workplace!
-
@marcinozga - It is a family business where the c-level and partners are almost all members of the family. This was on laptops that were used at home and on the road.
-
@strongbad What kind of movies do you like to watch at work? Hmm...? <wink wink>

New fire suppression systems have performance monitoring and water pressure reporting etc built in While the sprinkler would pop at due to heat it still.
