Hulu will make its basic plan cheaper as Netflix gets pricier

The company is positioning itself for a year of fiercer competition.

In February, Hulu will drop the price of its ad-supported, on-demand streaming service from $7.99 per month to $5.99, while also raising the base price of its live TV cable replacement service from $39.99 per month to $44.99, Deadline reports. Its ad-free on-demand service will stay at $11.99.

      Not a fan of Hulu.

Huh - I like it just fine.

@Obsolesce I second that, mostly for the fact that their "premium" tier that is supposed to be ad-free is most certainly not ad-free.

I don't love Hulu. Mostly, because they don't have digital surround on all but a few devices. Also, they don't have a true commercial-free option. It is limited ads for certain shows. Also, I believe they still have limit of 1 stream at a time, which is dumb. That being said, my gf's sister shares hers, so I can watch Seinfeld.

The commercials are awful, not just a lot of them, but the actual ads are atrocious, too. But they do do more then one stream at a time, even on the cheaper option.

@wrx7m that's odd, because we use more than one at once. It "just works."

I have gotten an "error" message indicating someone else is using the account at the same time. They may have instituted it more recently or just started cracking down. I like that Netflix gives you the option to have 4 streams with the UHD package. I let my parents and gf use it.

Apple’s next-gen AirPods may respond to hands-free Siri voice commands

More evidence that new AirPods are coming, we just don't know when.

The setup screen looks similar to other "Hey Siri" prompts for devices like the iPhone. Reportedly, the setup is the same as well—users configure Siri to respond to their own voices rather than the voices of others. The difference is that this configuration allows AirPods to recognize "Hey Siri" voice commands on their own. With current AirPod models, users must tap on the side of an AirPod before asking anything of Siri, otherwise the AirPods will not listen for the command.

I sense all kinds of problems with this plan.

YES. omg. This is ultimately why we cancelled Hulu. The volume on the ads is usually like twice as loud as the shows. It's so bad.

that too. They have audio issues in general. Start and stop the same show a few times and the same scenes will be at totally different volumes!

Linux Mint 19.1: A sneaky popular distro skips upheaval, offers small upgrades

Anecdotally, Mint feels like one of Linux's most popular distros—updates like 19.1 show why.

While Ubuntu and Red Hat grabbed most of the Linux headlines last year, Linux Mint, once the darling of the tech press, had a relatively quiet year. Perhaps that's understandable with IBM buying Red Hat and Canonical moving back to the GNOME desktop. For the most part Linux Mint and its developers seemed to keep their heads down, working away while others enjoyed the limelight. Still, the Linux Mint team did churn out version 19, which brought the distro up to the Ubuntu 18.04 base.

Apple may be gearing up to release new iPads, 7th-gen iPod Touch soon

The iOS 12.2 beta references four new iPads and one mysterious iPod.

All the new iPads are listed as variants of "iPad11," showing both Wi-Fi and cellular models of the same device. The new iPod in question is dubbed "iPod9," a designation that hasn't been assigned to any existing iPods.

Huawei Matebook 13 review: A cheaper Matebook X Pro with killer performance

This $1,299 laptop is stiff competition for Huawei's own $1,499 Matebook X Pro.

Despite company turmoil, Huawei continues to go after a slice of the US laptop market. Following the release of the Matebook X Pro last year, the Chinese company debuted the Matebook 13 today. The thin-and-light notebook promises to be lighter on customers' wallets than last year's more premium model but still strong in design and specs.
