I don't know how to not care. I always see the network as my baby. Also, it's in my best interest for us to get our contract renewal whenever that comes up.

Hopefully my motivation to learn will produce results in the next half year and I'll be able to specialize more. That may lead to a better job. I'll update this thread tomorrow when I have more information. Thanks for the help @Kelly.

He's a jack of all trades, they don't have dedicated Server team, don't have a dedicated desktop team. Don't have a dedicated Helpdesk.He gets to wear all of those hats.

Yeah kind of. The servers aren't my responsibility until something happens that everyone else doesn't know. I guess they trust me although I don't know why

The smaller the team, the more hats one must wear. Division of responsibilities amongst an enterprise sized team has little or no bearing on a one or two person IT department.

It cannot be overstated how bad this is. The network is NOT your baby. This attitude means that IT is the wrong career path for you, it means that entrepreneurship is the right path. Owners own the network, it is their baby, not the IT team's.
The idea that you own or oversee the network is so unhealthy, it has no place in IT. It will cause you to be a bad employee, it will make you unhappy. There is no good outcome of it - not for you, not for the business.

No, not kind of. If there is a team that that is their job it is not your job. Don't let them give you that job without giving you pay for that job you're letting them abuse you. This is 100% your problem and 100% your fault for letting them do it. It is not your problem. If the problem in packs your job pinpoint the problem send it to the person who need to take care of it and fucking ignore it it is not your goddamn problem.

Not kind of. Are they, or are they not? Think about it for a minute, chances are you know the answer here. Are you the admin who "owns" the servers, or do you work on them with someone else's permission?

I hear you guys, but ultimately I'm not going to be doing this much longer most likely. I'm going to study extremely hard for 6 months and see where I'm at. If I'm not happy then I'm going to start doing something else. I've spoken to some of you privately for...days in some cases. I'm either cut out for this or I'm not. I'm most likely not but we will see.

Actually no you're not listening because if you were you would not be hating your job and you would actually be getting something done the problem is you not listening to what we're telling you that you can't own everything in less it is actually your job and you're being paid for that and if you were actually being paid for that you will be making a shit ton more money and not have the stress that you have

Then your time in which to learn this lesson is limited. You've made it MORE important to learn this now, rather than less. No amount of changing jobs or careers will solve this problem, it's nothing to do with IT or the job or even the career, it's all about how you perceive yourself as an employee and the more you want to change, advance or like what you do more, the more important it is to avoid excuses, self reflect and figure out how to fix this problem now.

This is all good, it really is, but it ignores the fundamental problems. This will not change the issues, no matter what role you get in IT, it will be the same. No matter what role you get outside of IT, it will be the same.

I'm mostly unhappy because of my own lack of knowledge. I think I should be further along than I am. Some of my friends on here disagree but It's hard to me to accept that. I find it difficult to say no when someone needs help. I am also not in the same position you and Scott are where I can leave a job very easily and find work. That is what your dedication and intelligence has bought you. I'm not as smart are you guys and I'm also younger.

But this is completely coloured by the fact that you can't identify what your job is, you try to do jobs that are not yours and you are not able to accept the role of employee but want to be a proxy owner. Your not in a position, until these things are fixed, to even discuss your educational or skill status. You don't have a bar to measure against until these other problems are fixed.
You are getting distracted by ancillary issues and using them to excuse yourself from digging into the real problems at the core.

In my experience if you refuse to do things you are fired. I can't afford to be fired. I actively seek employment constantly and I try to educate myself as much as possible. What else can I do? You guys can do things like that because you're in the position of power. A guy like me who knows very little isn't in the position of power in the same way. Sure, I can leave. Now what?

@wirestyle22 just told me that he's part of a 4 person team (including his boss) that service all IT for the city.
That's 700 endpoint, not including WAPs, switches, routers, firewalls, etc.
So, as I said before, while he might not be the point person on the servers, they are definitely part of his job when his teammates can't figure something out.

@Dashrender 22 buildings although my last job I covered 33 by myself.
Let me even add fuel to the fire. We were called into a meeting recently that was in regards to reshaping the way we address our ticketing. So, I was hired to work for the city but my boss has many contracts at other businesses/colleges/etc. Now we are going to be taking care of all of the tickets that come in for everything. Each new contract that comes in, which could double or even triple my workload is going to get me a 2% raise, which is $1000 (I make 50k, I don't care if you know that). So it's even worse than you guys think. I'm actively looking. I don't know what else to say here. I need to eat.
