Domain Controller Troubleshoot
-
Hello guys,
can you suggest any tool for DC troubleshooting in windows server 2012?
thanks
-
Best place to start with is... what's wrong? That's way too broad of a question to answer on its own
-
sometimes i cannot reach my DC,,
i know about dcdiag
is there anything else? -
That's way too high level as a place to start. Can you not ping it? Is the service running? What does "cannot reach it" mean exactly? Maybe the system has crashed or rebooted? Maybe network is down? Maybe DNS is having an issue. We need to back up and look at things at a much higher level to know what kind of lower level tools to look at. You can't use DC specific tools yet, you need to do basic IT troubleshooting so that you know what to drill down to.
-
Also, start with logs.

i want to troubleshoot the DC from another PC in the domain...

Same processes. Can you ping it? Can you access it? Can you log in? What do the logs say, etc.
That you are working from another PC on the domain is assumed. That's always how we work. But your wording makes me wonder... are you not able to access the server?

at the moment i am, but there are certain cases i cannot.. or some other pc on the domain cannot be reached at certain times thats why i want to trouleshoot it...

Sounds like a network issue. Any reason to believe that it is related to the Domain Controller?

And what do the logs say for the server?

Are you pinging it by IP or hostname?

Are you pinging it by IP or hostname?
The better question is he able to ping it at all, is he losing packets during a ping?
-
I'm not sure we are even up to pinging yet. We aren't clear what "cannot be reached" means here.
-
The first thing to check is your DNS. Are you using the server's DNS server as your primary DNS server setting on your client? If not, you can have weird issues like you are having.
If you check your logs, you'll probably see events that say the domain controller can't be reached, but it won't tell you why.
You'll have to trouble shoot when it's happening. Like Scott said, when you're having the problem, can you ping it by name? Can you ping the domain name? What does nslookup give you when you put in the server name. Those are the basics of troubleshooting your issue.

I'm thinking this is most likely a DNS issue but Mike essentially posted what I was going to post. OP hasn't responded yet though.

Any movement on this?

The issue is vague enough, it could just be loose cables.

actually i have not access to the domain controller, just the servers connected to it..

Why are you involved in trying to fix it then?

Then the admins that maintain the DC's need to be alerted, but the more info you give them the better. Did they change out the DC's and the DNS servers are different? Are your servers statically assigned or DHCP?
