VMU Virtualization Smackdown: HyperConvergence versus Cloud Computing
1PM Central US Time, Spiceworks Webinar
Come hang out with @dpaquette and @scottalanmiller as @scale presents the Hyperconvergence v Cloud discussion on the Spiceworks VMU Webinar Series. We will be discussing the roles of hyperconverged infrastructure and cloud computing and how they compete, where they are each appropriate, etc.
From the registration page:
Now that virtualization is everywhere, the name of the game is getting it up and running as fast and easy as possible. The two biggest ways to do this? Hyperconverged Infrastructure and the Cloud.
Join us for a video meetup where we look at the considerations you should make before deciding what technology should be the future of your server room.
We will discuss:
- How to ensure performance based on your network reliability
- Data compliance considerations for hyperconvergence and cloud-based solutions
- Is it really either-or? Are there ways to get the best of both worlds?
- Live Event Bonus: One attendee of the event will win an Airhogs helix video drone
-
This starts in 75 minutes!
-
I'm hanging out on the test call stuff now.
-
On now, come watch us!
-
Doing introductions now. @dpaquette just said he was technical! News to me
-
Talking Inverted Pyramids now and why they are bad.
-
@dpaquette is talking about what new customers look like today. Most customers for hyperconvergence today are existing virtualizers who are moving to a new solution or architecture rather than first timers just getting into virtualization.
-
Awesome guys, have fun on the webinar!
-
Talking horizontally scaling (elastic) workloads.
-
Talking leasing.

Talking leasing.
Wish I could be in on this... For something like a Hyperconverged setup, would this make sense to just have the gear on a perpetual lease so that every 3 years, the equipment gets upgraded, etc ?
The business can add that as a "fixed cost" to help budgeting, etc...

Yes, that can make a lot of sense. Scale specifically does "lease to own" so you'd own the old gear at the end of the first cycle. But that could work really well. You could also do a staggered lease so that you upgrade 33% per year, for example, so you have newer and older servers mixed in. Doing what you describe would guarantee new gear regularly with absolutely predictable pricing.

Talking RAID and RAIN for SSD.
