For a useful suggestion - did the drive come partitioned? Perhaps blow it away with DD, at least a GB or two
Yes, but we aren't close to needing to write to the drive yet, we can't boot the kernel. How do we run DD when you can't boot yet?
Are you getting a
grub>>
prompt, or a normal shell? If you're into a normal shell, it's gotten past boot, but is not getting into the installer from busybox.

@scottalanmiller I can't vouch for them I'd try it.
20+ minutes per boot test, sadly.

Dang. Are you sure something isn't wrong with the thing?

Seems fine with Windows 10

Getting OpenSuse Tumbleweed downloaded so that I can test with a totally different installer.

@scottalanmiller -- If you get the flashing screen issue, that's a problem that is resolved by doing updates.

Flashing screen? It doesn't even load the OS yet. We are a long way from worrying about a flashing screen.

Even on Tumbleweed?

Tumbleweed failed, working on a fresh attempt.

Creating my LiveUSB now, will reboot in a minute

Which distro are you testing first?
-
I wonder if it is related to this
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Realtek_8169_driver_problem
Could it be the network drivers hanging it all up? Perhaps disable the NIC in the bios and see if you're able to get past that?
-
or booting with brokenmodules=r8169
