What Are You Doing Right Now

Maybe ML as a community should build out a lab-class cloud service. Something that is not as reliable as RS, EC2, etc. but cost a fraction as much. We have way more technical capabilities here than some providers and we can see that a lot of us like the idea of the service, just need something more useful and reliable.
For the amount of money that this community put in alone, we could build out a more reliable service!

Checking out a VPS Provider web site that I just stumbled across... http://lowendbox.com/ ... They have a lot of providers and such. I haven't picked one out yet, but the prices are extremely reasonable and the reps for the sites represented appear to be quite active on the site.

I hate to link to people's despair but... another "I used a SAN and now lost everything" post... http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/932940-lost-servers-to-san-data-corruption-need-help-with-restoration-process
Lots of servers depending on one, low end system with nothing to protect it.

@scottalanmiller oh fk man, I feel bad for that guy. DFS is extremely shitty to use and support. We got it all out of our network shortly after I started here and my boss wanted to light the server on fire to make sure it's evil never escaped into the world.

DFS on top of a single EQL SAN. Talk about a disaster. Layers of "redundancy" all sitting on a single, low end SAN. Of course the SAN died taking every VM, all the DFS redundancy, everything with it. How could they not have seen that coming?
-
That they are using DFS is just silly to have layered that on top of the same storage array!
-
Pasta primavera and Love Boat.
-
@scottalanmiller lol @ "redundancy"

@scottalanmiller did you get a refund for the paid ones? I have around $1000 dumped in with personal and business VMs purchased.
I'm told that we are getting a refund. Haven't seen it yet but would not expect to.
You might have to file a paypal claim for that. That's what I did. If they themselves where going to refund it should be pretty much instant.
-
@thecreativeone91 Any response to your Paypal claim?

I doubt they will. They haven't yet. Paypal will make a decision without them on the 11th.

@scottalanmiller I think so too. But Paypal makes it out to be a dialog between to two parties to attempt to resolve any issues, so I was wondering if C@C had even acknowledged his dispute.

Trying to decide if I want to go with an OpenVZ VPS from ZappieHost (4 Core, 2GB RAM, 100GB disk) or Joe's Data Center that is offering a Dedicated 2 Core / 2GB RAM / 250GB system (http://joesdatacenter.com/dedicated-server-packages (looking at the AMD under clearance sale) for $16 a month, lol.
Both include 10GB transfer and a static ip...

I've had mine open since Thursday night with no response from C@C.

What does a "dedicated" system mean? It's a ten year old low end desktop just for you?

10GB huh? That's not enough for some patches!

Trying to get this APN settings right for MMS on my Windows phone.

I'm still trying to figure this one out: Halt systems changes during the busiest times of the year.

Waiting...
So, how long does it take to to sync 8.8TB of backup files to an (almost) identical NAS each with 4Gb/s of bonded network interfaces?
Well, so far, longer than expected... might have something to do with the degraded RAID array
