Gmail, How Do You Run New Filters Against Existing Inbox

It's not be not using it. I've been saying this for a while. I have 99% of all email set to archive on arrival.

The "labels" will show like folders under your inbox on the left side usually. If it's still in the Inbox and you want to see everything with that label, you click on the folder/label nested under the Inbox. The same process is used for mail that's been archived/moved to that folder/label. Remember, Google refers to anything not in the Inbox as archived. So if it's been moved to a specific folder/label and there is no copy in the Inbox, it's archived and you can view it by going to the folder.

All those other folders are labels, technically. But a label is also a folder. When you archive to a label, it just moves it to that folder and removes it from the Inbox. I have a ton of stuff setup to label and archive automatically.

Okay, so if I Archive + Label, it will act like a folder, more or less?
What happens if you Archive but don't Label?

Labels are definitely much better than folders - essentially because you can have multiple labels attached to a single e-mail. After using labels, I find Outlook folders really suck and are a horribly dated concept.

It goes into an All Mail Label which is hidden but searchable. Not the best way of going about it for sure, but at least it would get it out of your inbox.
Edit: It isn't hidden, my mistake it is actually under the More tab at the bottom of your label list.

I would agree conceptually. It is, in theory, no different than the taxonomy of using Sharepoint tags for files instead of putting things into folders. It's not a Google idea, it is just implemented very oddly here (and not working for me.) I've been a proponent of the concept for a long time. But any email system needs to be solid. If it was only a matter of using a tagging system it would be great.

This is true. Think of Gmail labels like tagging, and Outlook folders like categories in a forum.

If you go into your settings on the Gmail interface you can actually prevent certain labels from syncing to any devices. Although by default I think only Inbox is synced for Android and iOS.

The message, for all intents just vanishes.... but you can get to mail that is archived with no labels on Gmail by searching for
-label:inbox and has:nouserlabels
That should get you there.

Or just click all mail as noted above. No need for arcane search syntax.
