I don't see the lights flicker, but I could definitely tell when someone was using 60 Hz on a monitor. Anything higher and I was fine.

Ugh, I can't imagine trying to use a 30Hz display!

@scottalanmiller Same reason I'm very unhappy with my 30hz 4K monitor. Should have waited and got the 60.

what content do you have driving a 4K? is anything even recorded in 4k yet?

Almost everything professionally made is recorded at 4k or 6k Not everyone is doing 4k deliverables yet.

But it uses a Horrible GOP codec with lots of P Frames and less I frames.. ugh.

I know nothing about video recording, I understand P frames and I frames just not much else.

Depends on the bitrate of the H.264 it's using. We fill 240GB SSDs in no time 2-3 seconds will get you 5-8GB of footage with higher bit rate codecs (not H.264)

H.264 is a GOP so the length will also be determined by how much data and motion is in your footage. It's a VBR codec.

Only the top end Hero4 Black does that. But it does, yes, that's why we chose it.

Why? because you want to be able to zoom to ridiculous levels and see your nose hairs 😛

Really depends on the codec. 4K is only the resolution. How you compress it plays an enormous factor. Netflix UltraHD 4K is 16Mb/s.

That's not a small ask, even today.

Not as much as you'd think streaming is almost always AVC H.264 or AVC H.265 4k can easily be as low as 10Mbps. The problem is there is a lot of resources used in decoding the codec so some peoples CPU/GPUs may not keep up.

Gaming at 4K is amazing, the detail is really stunning. 30hz is super off putting though, I am spoiled by 120hz 1080P.

For regular desktop tasks 4K kicks freaking butt, you can have a ton of content up and manage it all. Sharp eyesight is necessary though desktop scaling is critical.

Gaming at 4K is also hilarious when you attempt to record it - I flattened my 840Pro 256gb SSD even attempting it. This may indeed have been a CPU* limit (AMD8320 @4.2ghz) though I suspect RAID0 SSD's will be required at today's speeds to do it nicely and not bring your whole system to a halt.

Edit: *CPU was likely the bottleneck from what I witnessed but the SSD probably couldn't keep up either. Anyone willing to send me a top of the line i7 + board + RAM will get first priority when I release the results 😉

30hz 4k monitors are really only meant for office use. The good 4k Monitors aren't even out yet (HP Dreamcolor). The Panasonic BT-4LH310 is really nice but it's a Broadcast monitor not a computer monitor.
