My take on all the SW stuff (as a persona non grata) is that I could just show up in Austin during the festivities and have a blast without a conference ticket.

You can, for sure. You can do SO much without a ticket.

I know most of the cool kids, why spend 200 bucks to get vendor assaulted?

First, because it is only $99 so the total amount you have to spend isn't that much. With that you are getting three happy hours, five full meals, snacks, coffee, sodas, the big party, etc. which are all hard cost items worth nearly the $99. A lot of meeting up and coordinating happens at the event. Plus prizes galore.

So monetarily, the ticket is pretty much just for your food and beer. Then you get to spend your days hanging out with the group that parties at night.

Even if you skip every session, keynote, formal event, and even the vendor showcase, you can still generally justify a ticket.

I was actually thinking about this. I usually got more value from the after events then I did from the conference.

I went last year not knowing if I'd get in just to do the after parties, but got welcomed in so did the full conference. But having been many times, the after events alone are worth the trip to Austin during the conference.

And remember, the "after" events start TWO days before the official conference. Things like the East Siders event, the Salt Lick event, the Scale boat and others are often (but not always) outside of the conference start and stop dates and times. Plus there are loads of Spicehead meetups. So if are looking for ways to make it valuable, you can easily spend six days there and get loads of value and never go into the conference.

But honestly, once you are getting the flight, hotels, etc. just spend $99 and eat your other meals with everyone else.

I immediately asked to go next year...our President said he wants to make it a regular thing, but wants to "see how things are" closer to the next one...regardless, I'll take it as PTO...I'm going back... 🙂

Ah, @Dashrender and I were eating with @pchiodo and @Dominica instead of waiting for the crowd.

We picked up a random attendee in our hotel elevator to join us. Anthony or something.

@JaredBusch yup, that's Anthony from NYC. He runs IT for an architectural firm. I've got his contact info and will give him a shout.

because that ticket price is nothing compared to the air line/hotel bill/food, etc.

I was always paying for those myself, and both times I went it was really just a vacation near a tech convention. And I didn't have to spend much on food or drink because I knew where to find vendor sponsored events.

Since they added vendors, that's like nine new people from that one thing per year. Even at six per year, that's 66 people. Then the PCs. But I know that there are a lot of vendors with awards. So assume more like 80.

If you have attendance of 1,000 and 80 are free, that's 8%. Now there are more than 1,000 attendees, but I bet that there are a bit more than 80 free tickets, too.

AFAIK SpiceLeaders are still getting free tickets and that much be dozens of additional people. Most of the freebie people that I know aren't part of the 80.

I specifically noted out SpiceLeaders. But those are not "lifetime" tickets.

I did not realize that the vendor Spicies also resulted in a free ticket.

They kind of are. Each SpiceCorps gets one or two tickets "for life". It's the life of the SpiceCorps, not the organizer. So different, but same effect. Which human gets to use the ticket will change over time, but the fact that the ticket remains is more or less static.

Yes, since I won I Spicy Award I do get the Free Ticket for life but for the PC I did not know that as I wasn't given that choice or any extras.

because that ticket price is nothing compared to the air line/hotel bill/food, etc.

I have a free ticket for life.

A lot of people do at this point.

A lot is pushing it, I would say.

All the PC people like yourself and @dbeato
And then the those who won Spicies.

There are many others that get free tickets for their role, but those are not for life.
Such as myself as a SpiceLeader or anyone selected as a Speaker.

Obviously, behind the scenes from the marketing side, there are probably plenty of free tickets given out. I know various tech writers have gotten them over the years, etc. but again, not for life.

Yes, since I won I Spicy Award I do get the Free Ticket for life but for the PC I did not know that as I wasn't given that choice or any extras.

One of the PC perks. unless they decided to remove it.

It is still there. But I'm not aware of any other perks. That was the only one.
