Anyone at Handlebar? I'm here st 843 and don't see anyone

Handlebar smelled bad. So we went to container bar. Then moved on to Touché

End of the 12th Austin Spiceworld event. Heading back to Dallas in ~30 minutes. So awesome seeing everyone.

@scottalanmiller did they announce the end of future SpiceWorld events or if the Spiceworks applications will still exist now that the community is the only thing ZDNet wants?

They are selling tickets for SW2020, so presumably not. The blog post from the keynote (I think) makes it sound like they are going to double down on the reasons for selling to ZD that people objected to, but I might be reading too much between the lines.

My take on all the SW stuff (as a persona non grata) is that I could just show up in Austin during the festivities and have a blast without a conference ticket. I know most of the cool kids, why spend 200 bucks to get vendor assaulted?

I was actually thinking about this. I usually got more value from the after events then I did from the conference.

Plus a few days in Austin is always fun.

I know from behind the scenes that ZD has committed financially and contractually to at the very least two more Spiceworld, which is more than there ever way before (always one year at most before.) So at least in the short term, the stability of SW will be more, not less.

That's far less important than the contracts that are for 2021 that are already in place. Vendors are already lined up and committed two years out.

You can, for sure. You can do SO much without a ticket.

I know most of the cool kids, why spend 200 bucks to get vendor assaulted?

First, because it is only $99 so the total amount you have to spend isn't that much. With that you are getting three happy hours, five full meals, snacks, coffee, sodas, the big party, etc. which are all hard cost items worth nearly the $99. A lot of meeting up and coordinating happens at the event. Plus prizes galore.

So monetarily, the ticket is pretty much just for your food and beer. Then you get to spend your days hanging out with the group that parties at night.

Even if you skip every session, keynote, formal event, and even the vendor showcase, you can still generally justify a ticket.

I went last year not knowing if I'd get in just to do the after parties, but got welcomed in so did the full conference. But having been many times, the after events alone are worth the trip to Austin during the conference.

And remember, the "after" events start TWO days before the official conference. Things like the East Siders event, the Salt Lick event, the Scale boat and others are often (but not always) outside of the conference start and stop dates and times. Plus there are loads of Spicehead meetups. So if are looking for ways to make it valuable, you can easily spend six days there and get loads of value and never go into the conference.

But honestly, once you are getting the flight, hotels, etc. just spend $99 and eat your other meals with everyone else.

I immediately asked to go next year...our President said he wants to make it a regular thing, but wants to "see how things are" closer to the next one...regardless, I'll take it as PTO...I'm going back... 🙂

We picked up a random attendee in our hotel elevator to join us. Anthony or something.
