I have a physical server running Server 2016 with Hyper-V, I installed Server 2016 as one of the VMS and copied files over from their old server. I am getting a message to backup my encryption key.

It seems as if EFS has been turned on somehow. I am the only one who has touched this server and didn't turn it on. None of the files coming from the old server were encrypted.

      Has anyone seen this before?

Is probably one of the copied files from the old server, did you check which files are encrypted on the server?

Yes, chatting with @scottalanmiller he found that all Server Windows 2016's have EFS on by default. I have just never seen a pop-up telling me to back up the key before.

Gotcha, this happens with Windows 10 too.

Our shop has seen some Windows 10 Laptops that seem to have Bitlocker turned on by default. Which is a little scary if you don't know it's on and to backup your key.

Dell has been shipping a lot with bitlocker on by default.

That's Dell doing it then, not Windows. Totally different.

Yeah, but that is what I am referring to, I understand that you want to take out Microsoft of the equation but still it is someone before getting to the business. Example below

Ffs, that's dumb. As far as key backups go, anyone on a domain can enable automatic backup to AD, it's saved us more than once at work. The setting is automatically pushed via GPO so any machines that have BL enabled have a copy of the key saved on the computer object

Some customers are small and Don't need VL for imaging, some customers buy their own computer and then let us know after it is brought to the busines and then it is a decision to reinstall or use what the vendor sent (which in the case of Delll, they have not been sending crapware on their installs).

You can, but that is not the case, this is a device that wouldn't be joined to the domain. This is prior to that...
