I'm guessing you're just using the command

      service squid start

      Or substitute start for restart?

Have you recently installed anything new on your pfSense box or made any configuration changes?

The access log is the log of what Squid has allowed. If Squid is not running, there is no process to write to that log. That log will never show anything about Squid's behaviour. You need to look at the system logs to see why a process is not starting properly.

                                        Try the following commands:

                                        kill -15 squid
                                        service squid start
