      It's for my OWN desktop.

So why do you care about the components? Just get something off of a shelf that meets your performance requirements.

This WAS me buying off of the shelf. The vendor used motherboards that all had this HDMI / DVI limitation.

The one I'm going with is the one in the off the shelf solution.

But you upvoted it based on a false premise. It's a Cybertron OTS that I'm buying.

Well I ordered from Cybertron after doing way too much research to make sure it would meet my needs and guess what, the parts were switched from what was listed and it's useless.

THAT is why you whitebox, because you actually can guarantee what you are getting. Wondering about wasting my time? I spent a load of time ensuring the non-whitebox was correct. I could have built a white box in less labour time AND not waited several days to do it and I just built it myself which takes all of 30 minutes.

How can you test something you don't have?

                      +1 on that.

When we order servers we have them built with our components of choice from a Supermicro reseller. So we don't get an unknown Dell mixed use SSD, we get Samsung SM893 or whatever we want. When customers wants Dell or HP and there are special considerations for the hardware it takes a lot more time to find a combination that will get the job done.

Checking specs, looking at photos, etc.

                          Cybertron

I don't even know who this is (yes I googled them and found them, still doesn't mean I know who they are).

Unless you have some stupid weird use case, you order a basic system from Dell or HP that fits your needs and you walk away done.

Whitebox is absolutely the wrong way to go.
