Webroot Freezing Windows 10
-
We've been working to update all our machines to 1709, and the latest and greatest cumulative updates.
Sometime after upgrading, the machines started locking up after the user logs in. They enter their password, and within seconds, the machine totally freezes up. Booting into Safe Mode and doing anything with the WRSA file (like trying to uninstall it) also would result in the machine locking up. I got around this by just disabling Webroot, but wanted to get to the bottom of the issue.
After spending some time today on the phone with Webroot, it was determined there is a recently found perfect storm of the following things...
- 1709
- meltdown/spectre patch
- sandybridge architecture
- Webroot
that is causing this issue. It is supposedly fixed in the next 9.0.20.X release.
There is a workaround that I did by using BCDEDIT to set debug to on. But I would probably check with their support before doing that. (Or go for it, if you are brave.)

Official info from my updated ticket...
The issue you are having with Webroot on the endpoints with Sandy Bridge processors and the Meltdown / Specter patch is a known issue that is reportedly fixed in our upcoming 9.0.20.xx release.
While on the call, I mentioned the possibility of installing a previous version of Webroot and not allowing it to update, but this workaround is no longer considered a reliable one.
What did work was running this command from an elevated prompt:
bcdedit /set debug on
But then when 9.0.20.xx is released, you will want to turn this setting off:
bcdedit /set debug off
The affect of this setting being on is the possibility of a local account or network account with permissions to the endpoint being able to run debugging commands and being a potential vulnerability. Short term you should be fine, but you would not want this on indefinitely.

Why are you deploying 1709 when 1803 is due any day?

I wonder if this will be fixed on 1803?

Nothing wrong with being deployed and ready. We just deployed Fedora 27 knowing 28 is just weeks away.

"The" edge meaning the back edge, rather than the leading edge

Nothin for nothin, but ...
...considering 1709 (09, not 03) has been out for six months now and it still having issues, I'm not so sure jumping on 1803 as soon as it releases is that great an idea. -

My laptop is on the pre-release cycle. I get everything somewhere between 2 weeks and a month before the "normals" get it. I've not had any problems at all.

I am not fan of the 18 month cycle, let me just say.

1709 had a lot of issues with specific things at one of my clients.
Changes to Edge and Internet Explorer that caused things to just not work.
There was also a problem that Webroot was silently fucking things up during the update.Basically 1709 was a disaster at roll out. Not all caused by Windows.
All office users at all of my clients are now on 1709, but that was not finally forced until December/January.
I hope to hell 1803 is not as annoying. Work is nice, but trying to shutdown Windows 10 from updating is a pain in the ass.

By the way even Microsoft only released 1709 as current branch for business in January of this year so it was pretty later after the release on the fall. I just did this upgrade and even with WSUS and restart restrictions for after 7:30 PM computers reboot (about 6 out of 200) in the middle of the day.

And 1803 is still not out.. I guess they need to release 1804 instead.
