Ubiquiti AP's can't be powered by HP POE switches

Hmm.. the power requirements for the Ubiquiti APs is higher than the HP POE switch I have can provide - this is disappointing.

Which model of Unifi APs? I know some have to have a special Unifi PoE switch, but I was thinking some of the newer ones supported 802.3af or 802.3at.

Yep, the UAP and UAP LR can't be powered by normal PoE, the UAP Pro can however.

This is correct. The basic UAP does not support the 802.3af/at PoE standards to be powered by switches that use those standards.
The UAP Pro supports 802.3af
The UAP AC supports 802.3at

The UAP requires 48V @ .5 amps (24 watts).
POE+ is rated at 25.5 watts per port. See the Wiki here..
The Wiki mentions that POE(+) only supports 2 pairs, not 4 - it's likely that UAP is using more than 2 pair to power it. If that's the case, no POE+ will support them.
