Any recommendations for new backup solution? Client wants to take backup copies offsite.

then, what kind of topology do you have? are you backing up clients or is this a database?!
which price range? you are talking about NASes. If you mean those "cheap" appliances I think you can think about a cloud solution like ...Only their Database. This is a business in the Dental industry so most data is documents, xray images, sql database, etc. I believe cloud backup has been mentioned to customer, but they are considering the cost. I will check on the retention settings.

Another common option is adding a cache layer. D2D2T. Add a NAS between the servers and the tape. Then you can backup quickly to a local spot, then backup to tape from there and you don't care how long that takes. Then they can take the tape offsite same as always.

Is there a particular application you recommend that would perform this task?

This was my first thinking upon reading this thread.

Pretty sure Veeam can do this.

Any modern, enterprise backup system will do this, it's very standard as it is basically needed for some tapes otherwise they "shine" too easily. Veeam, BE, ArcServer, Netbackup, they all do it.

Can you define what shine means?

Shine is when the tape can't move past the tape head at a constant full-speed rate and the tape head spins against a single spot on the tape longer than other parts causing it to "shoe shine" it, by rubbing that one spot over and over wearing it out.

Thanks.
How would someone know if a tape is beginning to shine?

Well if you don't have D2D2T, assume that it is. Almost nothing can send to tape fast enough to avoid it with modern tape systems.

Veeam does have tape library integration, but I am not sure how it works with the agent side of things. I am assuming nothing is virtualized in this scenario. It also has integration with Starwind and Amazon S3/Glacier VTL.

Agents work the same as long as you are using the paid console based version.

@fredtx - Are the tapes meant for long term archiving or just to take a copy offsite?
Some NAS models like Synology and Qnap have a copy button feature on the front for syncing data to a usb drive. Maybe they could use Veeam Endpoint for the initial backup to the NAS and then the copy button for a second copy to take offsite on the usb drive.

Actually, one of my colleagues mentioned that today. We are looking at implementing a Qnap, but are unsure how well it would copy over the security permissions from the servers to the Qnap.

It's good for both!

In most cases like this, faster tape is really just the best answer.
I got an LTO6 averaging over 14 GB per minute which isn't bad.

What kind of disk back ending that throughput?

MD1000. 8x 8TB SATA HDDs in a RAID10.

It’s not part of the equation. The backup system records the files. The type of storage you use doesn’t interact with the backup and corrupt it.

Think about backups as unlike copying files to live storage. The details for restoring is inside the files, not meta data stored on the NAS
